You seem to have some really bad installers in the US, you wouldn't get away with that in the UK. Maybe I should move over the pond? If I can't get to a client within 48 hrs then I do it at the weekend or evening. I also have a schedule where I check in on a clients systems remotely about once a month.

There is nothing magical about composer pro. if I had access to the same kb articles as the dealers I would never need training or have a need to call a dealer. Ever. Not being conceded as there are plenty of people like myself who could do the same.

    Josh.ai C4 driver

Since unveiling Josh.ai at CEDIA a few months ago we've received numerous requests for a C4 driver. I just wanted to post here that the driver is almost ready and we're quite happy with how it's turning out. If you're not familiar with Josh.ai, check out http://josh.ai to see a video and get some info. Happy to answer questions here or by email at alex@josh.ai. Right now we're very much focused on the high-end of the market in terms of dealers and pricing (typically 8-10,000+ sqft homes), but we'll be unveiling a number of new products in 2017 we're pretty excited about. For now we're very happy to integrate nicely with C4!

How much of your private life are you willing to put in someone else's computer? (Recent news regarding Echo, and murder, and the smart water meter that showed 100+ gallons of water usage at 2am.) Sir, we have your cloud report... it shows your garage door opened at 1:15am, then you turned on the kitchen light, and the basement light where the axe was stored...

I completely agree with you. I was the only programmer for my company, and I loved going above and beyond. Every customer knew me by name, and they asked for me specifically. I enjoyed building personal relationships with my customers. @jfh, I know it sucks to have to deal with this, but try finding a better local dealer. If your house has as much Control4 as I suspect it does, a good dealer is going to come out, meet you, and check out your system if you express you're interested in finding a new dealer.

Do you not have a small Control4 dealer near you? They are probably going to provide faster response to issues and more likely to be enthusiastic about trying new driver / toys than a large dealer focused on paying the office staff. I wouldn't even like to count up the amount of unpaid hours I do, but it's not just my job ... it's a hobby too.

I don't think my original dealer is bad as much as I think they focus on new work over supporting existing customers. Because I use third party drivers they consider my system "complex" and will only send one particular installer to me. I happen to like working with him, but his value to me is doing the physical install work. I get almost no value add on the software side. If I have any problem, C4 support won't get involved unless a dealer is physically onsite even when all they do is hand the phone to me to talk to support. That hadn't been needed often, but when it takes a month to schedule someone onsite to cover something that takes me a few minutes on the phone is very frustrating. If I have a question, I'm lucky if I get an acknowledgement in 48 hours, much less an answer. Getting sales info can take a week or so, getting technical questions answered is weeks unless I call which I don't like to do (and sometimes it's days for a return call). They were originally upset when I had a remote dealer found here install some drivers and do some config for me (it was a couple hours work for which my dealer wanted to charge me $500 research time for plus the actual time to install. That was the first time I became upset about the whole "I can't license Pro" issue) and I used to hear "we don't know what the other dealer did, so I don't know if we can support you" as an excuse for why something couldn't get done. I understand it's somewhat of a Catch-22 for a dealer - you can't afford to pay someone to sit around waiting for support calls when he could be out wiring new jobs, but the answer to "when can you do x for me?" can't always be "in a few weeks", especially if it's just Composer work. When I encounter an issue or want to try a new driver, I want to address it now, not in a month. And when I have to wait a month to get charged hours at silly rates for Composer work I could easily do myself, it infuriates me ... To minimize my frustration, I now use multiple dealers, which is probably less than ideal for all, and direct new hardware purchases to those that are responsive to other support needs.

As a technical person myself it is impossible to read the second paragraph of anything. The first paragraph must contain all information as the rest is skipped ... unless there is a diagram or the first paragraph specifically references the second paragraph etc ... Only non techs will read this part.

    Updating HC500 to OS 2.9 ?

Ok so new issue arises in my mind. Since you don't have a remote or app. It is due to you using the system incorrectly. The hc500 will not output audio unless it selected by navigator. This is done with the remote app or by programming. So you need to have all of the correct bindings done. Then select the device as the active source then the hc500 will light up its inputs outputs. Double clicking on a device and controlling it is not the same thing as selecting an active audio device for a room.

UK IFTTT on Alexa has been activated

Just been playing with IFTTT and Alexa today. Using Alan Chow's driver for pushover to C4. Works really well 'Alex trigger dining room radio' ... radio starts playing through NuVo system. I know this is old hat to US users, but I've got some very excited customers!

I wouldn't go quite this far- I can envision a number of scenarios where I would still want to hire a good dealer. But I certainly wouldn't need that to install a new driver, change bindings or swap out a Blu Ray player. But C4 seems so convinced their entire business model collapses unless they assume all their customers are incapable of using or are disinterested in learning how to use Pro. Only a tiny fraction of end users would ever be interested in licensing Pro. How anyone thinks that will irreparably harm the dealer base is beyond comprehension.

    Prev Button not responding

All my money is on the pos cable box. You can test the remote responsiveness by pressing a cable channel up or down. You should see the ir flasher respond everytimev you press it. I'm betting the prev never worked either. Most cable Box drivers we deal with are not. If it did it could be ir flasher may need to be for better responsiveness

I've said it before - not licensing Pro only protects bad dealers and probably hurts good ones. Too bad for him. If he screwed it up, he should expect to pay time and materials to get it fixed.

I bet there would be a mass exodus from dealers if that ever occurred. Are you willing to take a week off from your real job to attend the week of training? Are you willing to pay for every minute associated with fixing what you may break and cannot resolve? I had a dealer a couple weeks ago wonder why the client's lighting scenes (several dozen of them) had all mysteriously vanished among other oddities; that prompted a truck-roll for the dealer ($$$). Turns out the client had loaded an outdated version of the project while monkeying around with Composer.

You don't need to add a skill, just use IFTTT to link to your Alexa account and pushover for the C4 driver. I can explain more later once the beer has worn off.

This is why customers are not given composer pro. Without an interface you cannot select the digital media source to come out of the controller even though you have convinced yourself that the dealer has sold you a defective unit and that you have set up all the software perfectly

My wife claims should something happen to me she would have to sell the house ! Go figure, its all there on the touch pad and iPad with labelled switches. I truly like my Control4 but if I knew then what I know now as to the acceptance of its capabilities by the boss I would not be a Control4 owner.

    2017 Thoughts for Control4

I'm obviously a bit biased (as I'm a Control4 employee), but speaking as someone who has been in the Home Automation industry for nearly 20 years (and has done AMX, DIY, and Control4), I've heard many, many times that 'full home' automation was going to be overrun by large company X or Y. 20 years ago, that was Microsoft or Sony, now it's Apple and Google. They're certainly big players, and will have automation functionality (as they should), and there are small players that do a lot of 'IoT' functionality, but creating what Control4 has created, a comprehensive system that allows you to use nearly any (controllable) device with nearly any other device, and that isn't a 'walled garden' that only lets some devices play is difficult. While I'd never say it's impossible for Google or Apple or someone I've never heard of will come out of the blue and take over the market, I still feel that Control4 is in the right place at the right time, and has the right strategy. I've not seen anything that beats the ease of use (and 'Wife Acceptance Factor') that Control4 has when properly setup. Control4 *does* continually try and provide better value to the homeowner on both products and services, and will continue. To the original poster, good luck with whatever your Home Automation system turns out to be. Hope you find something that works for you. Control4 is not for everybody, and that's OK. RyanE

    No Control in Control4

Anyone with Pro who obtained it by being a Control4 developer should not be programming end users systems. I think all those who offer their remote services on here are actual Control4 dealers. RyanE

    2017 Thoughts for Control4

I have a client with a cinema system in his house with an HC-300 and SR-250 remote. Think it was installed 5 or 6 years ago, works 100% of the time. Do you think the products from Amazon, Google etc etc will still work with 100% of the time after 6 years in use? All control in the cinema is IR, RS232, relays ... if the broadband goes down ... aw, it still works! Wonder what cloud based control would do ... eh, nada! The new control devices are exciting, but limited. People wonder why Crestron, AMX, Control4, Savant, RTI, URC etc have been around for so many years with such bad products ... it's amazing they survive

So true. My GC wanted to upcharge up the wazoo for panel lights. Once.i got in front of his electrical sub things got easy quick. There is almost less work on their part I ran my own lv. He had concerns mainly blaimstorming if his guys nailed a lv cable. When he saw thy were all in clips to keep them away from screws he stopped whining and I have not found a problem cable yet. Actually funny story, his elec sub wired the kitchen wrong. Wired all back to the panel. Was happy when I turned around and said no email needed, I just use a keypad not a keypad dimmer and fix it in the software.

? Such as? You can do it CHEAPER, sure. But value is an opinion. As others mentioned, if you want to switch back and forth between multiple apps, lose and or don't care about a lot of interoperability, you can piece things together. Not to mention having to spend your own time to figure it out and do it (not an issue for some, but it is too many) First 2 projects of 2017? Old clients that moved, did what you propose here, and found it lacking. Now we'll be retrofitting C4.

For me, im not interested in having to flip back and forth between 5+ apps to control my house making things much more difficult than needed. Also what would you be using for universal remotes? For those with distributed video that is a must and something about using a remote to select a source then to pull out your phone to run the app to select content is a painful experience in my opinion. It really depends on your level of complexity but a unified system definitely has its advantages

The one media box is connected via HDMI to the theater projector directly. The other ones outputs to a HDMI -> Component matrix which then is distributed to 11 zones. I haven't / probably won't for A LONG time go HDMI. I will wait for 4k Content to be standard probably before I upgrade. Audio is SONOS. All connects except for 3 connect amps. So 15 zones of SONOS I think now. 90% of what we use is all the distributed PLEX server. I actually don't have ANY local source anymore. I did connections in each room to hide local sources but thankfully haven't needed to yet. The minix is also distrubuted from HDMI -> Component. For some reason though, it looks bad. The computer looks normal, VERY sharp even with the conversion. You would never know it was component. The Minix however; is more what you would expect. It loses contrast, seems a bit washed, and has a bit of artifacting around text. I am quite picky about pic quality, despite me using component. The component is actually quite nice. For the theater, the component wasn't good enough with the projector. While most TV's look amazing (even my 60"s), the projector at 120" is not. So that is why I set up the second box and dedicated it to the theater. While it is not distributed whole house, it is not a local source. It is still in the rack and baluned to the projector. I have been thinking though that I want to see what a raspberry pi would be like on the projector as a local source. Audio though, would be a bitch if I did that. The main projects I am thinking of for the Pi would be : A smart mirror (but only with navigator and touch control) A zwave relay controller for blinds. At first I was thinking http but I have a vera I am not using and would love to see how stable I could make it with my blind motors. I have other threads on here about my blinds, it has been 3 years and i STILL don't have them set up This might be the opportunity to find a stable / awesome way to set them up. Plex local source for projector Beacon and / or NFC controller using IFTTT. I also want to see what can be done with this without having to use python or PHP. http://thethingbox.io/ To have a solution with control 4 that doesn't require customer code would be awesome.

    Alexa and C4

like I said, watch the videos on the website and you don't have to look forward to seeing more details... regarding the price - it has actually been lowered to $125. Sure, maybe it is slightly more than some more general purpose drivers (IFTTT for example), however I guess it depends on what your time/energy is worth. In relation to many other paid drivers (for example the MyQ driver from Houselogix which goes for $199 MSRP, and all it does is let you open and close your garage door and view status within the C4 app instead of the MyQ app), the driver is a steal considering the functionality which it enables.
