Unable to connect to MyHome over VPN

I have installed firmware that allows me to run OpenVPN server on my router and been able to establish a VPN connection from my iPad to my LAN over LTE - I am still at home when doing this but I have wifi turned off on the iPad so the connection is running though my cell phone company's (Rogers) LTE network. But when I start up the MyHome app on my iPad it tries to connect to my controller and then says:

"Unable to connect. Please join a Wifi network connected to your system or contact your dealer to enable Anywhere Access through 4Sight."

So does this mean that I can't use C4 remotely through an LTE connection even if I have a properly configured VPN running? Would it work remotely if I was connected via wifi rather than LTE/3G?

Do you mean delete the app from my iPad and then reinstall it?  Or is there another way to delete the controller in the app settings?

Should I be connected only via VPN (and not local wifi) while re-establishing and reconfiguring the connection to the controller?

you can connect via a properly connected and routed VPN to control4 and the myhome app will just think you are on the local network.  If you don't have your vpn routes set up right, the app will think you are outside your main home network.

I am running OpenVPN - OpenVPN server on my Asus RT-N66U router with Merlin firmware and the OpenVPN app on my iPad. But the app seems to know that wifi is shut off on the ipad. Note that I am able to SSH into my server so I have a valid connection.

I am running version 2.5 of Control4 - is that what you mean?  The iPad app reports Director version 2.5.2.247182-res.  I no longer have a valid subscription to 4sight if that matters.

I think there is a trick to it. Something like edit the IP address and then edit it back? But I also think you need to wait for the timeout. I would also just pay the $100, so you can press one button to connect instead of multiple (vpn then c4). After all you did buy a control system to help minimize button pressing.

Why don't I just buy a 4sight license?  Because there are many other uses in being able to make a VPN connection back to your LAN.  To be honest I don't know how often I will want to use C4 remotely, but I thought I would try it out now that I have a VPN working.

I have had 4sight subscriptions in the past and I pretty much never used them, except for being able to email notifications and now there are other drivers that can do that without requiring 4sight.

4Sight is, in my opinion, a complete waste. Everything 4Sight provides is easily accomplished at no charge.

let's finish that sentence.

By someone with a higher than average networking skillz and a willingness to open ports to a network with unencrypted devices on it.

I use a secure VPN as opposed to Port Forwarding.

I still stand by the fact that the 'average' control 4 user has no idea what you are talking about and the 'above average' ones here are writing because they are having trouble getting access to their C4 systems through VPN.

Hardly easier than the C4 offering. Cheaper yes.

Ultimately why is anyone fighting over whether to use the C4 solution or a VPN? The OP wants to use a VPN and asked for help setting it up, not for people to argue and look up security flaws just for the sake of argument.

Can't we just accept he wants a vpn and attempt to help?

Can you close the openvpn app then open safari on the iPad and type in say your router IP address and it connects to your router?

Yes. I can access my entire subnet. Take a look at your routing table after you connect.

I am the OP and use, I can log into the router from the web UI and I can also log into my C4 controller via a SSH session so I definitely have access back to my LAN.   So it looks like the redirect options sends all internet traffic over the VPN.  I will try that.
