Music feeding from cable TV to speakers just stops playing

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to troubleshoot why the music just stops playing through my system's speakers for no apparent reason. I have three different cable tv tuners and I use the digital music channels to play music in my venue that uses control 4 v2.5 (plus). I have eight c4 controllers and when the problem occur it affects my entire venue/speakers in every area (rooms are running on different controllers). The digital music tv channels are running through an audio/video switch that controls the tv and speakers and is connected to my control4 system. I'm thinking something is wrong with the switch. I have tried running sound through at least two of the tv tuners and the sound disappearing problem usually occurs after about 2.5-3 hours. The tv channels appear to remain online so I don't think the problem is with the cable boxes, however, occasionally I get a message through the tv screen that there's something wrong with the channel and I can reboot the cable box and the channel/sound starts working again (although I do manually choose the tv tuner again with my C4 system to get it "loaded" again). Other times, the music stops and I can change the channels and the cable box appears to be working fine (no error messages and current song info is displayed on screen, and changes without any audio coming from my speakers). Is it logical to think the problem is most likely with the a/v switch?

Are there any other sources connected to the switch? If so and it doesn't happen with those it may not be so clear cut. WHEN it happens, are you able to select an different cable box and get audio? It wouldn't be the first time that cable boxes, after and update, all of a sudden had issues doing one type of audio (hdmi, optical or stereo) all of a sudden. Check the settings on the cable box for audio, set it to it's simplest setting for everything (PCM, stereo, etc) and see if it alleviates the issue. You can start backtracking from there.

Switch is an easy to think of culprit as it connects everything to it, but it isn't always that easy. That's not saying it couldn't be however.

OK.. Time Warner put an amp on the cable lines and they don't drop off anymore.. but I'm still having problems with the audio clicking off. It happens when I use the auxillary jack (iPhone) music as a feed, too. The audio zones actually turn off for no apparent reason. I can immediately turn them back on.. or at least within 30 seconds or so. I even unplugged my Marantz receiver/amp and wired the speakers directly into the Control4 amp and the problem still occurs. I have noticed the screen saver going off sometimes, like the Controller is rebooting. I'm beyond frustrated with this. The system is in our banquet facility and it is embarrassing when the dance music just stops (or worse yet, sound for a movie or ballgame!). Do you think I need to replace the controller.. or is there a way to tell if it is the amp? I saw somewhere about some "torrent" software on a computer in my network that might be causing a problem.. anyone know about that? Any advice would be appreciated.

What has your dealer determined?

My dealer has one technician who might possibly be able to figure this out but he has not been available to come look at it... and to be quite honest, their rates are outrageous. I understand Control4 was once a leader in this technology, but other systems of this type are becoming more and more common. In my opinion, Control4 would be a much better product if they stuck to repairs only--and did away with their dealer-only proprietary system--so installation and troubleshooting could be done by homeowners and their chosen electronics technicians.

If the system tells you the zones are off, it's likely a controller reboot. And yes, BTSynch WILL cause that, although in 2.6 this has been fixed (I suppose 'prevented' is a better word as it is BTSynch's bad packets casuing the issue).

Thanks for your input.. I have suspected for a while now that the controller has issues.

I'm going to check computers for BTSync.. I'm running 2.5.2.247182-res

No computers turned on/connected and the problem still occurs. If I get a replacement controller via Amazon/Ebay, can I just load my project and play, or does the new hardware have to be set up by my dealer?

OK.. talked to my C4 dealer tech. I'm going to try changing the power source for the controller to see if the music clicks off. If it does, I'm going to try plugging the audio out into my bose instead of the amp to see if the music clicks off. If it does, it's probably the controller and he'll come over to see if C4 techs can find some corrupt software or something. If the music plays without the amp connected, it is most likely the amp or speakers and he will come over and have C4 monitor the speakers, etc., to see if something is blown or needs to be adjusted. Now that I think of it.. one of my outdoor speakers isn't working. Maybe it's that speaker that's causing my headaches. I'll post results later.
