howieumd
I know it's not something that could be utilized by a ton of people since there's so many different remote starters on an international scale, but does anybody here in the US think it'd be helpful if some drivers were created for remote starters on cars? I saw some older posts about somebody playing around with a Viper remote starter, but haven't seen any recent info, and was hoping somebody might have some further ideas or enough interest can be shown to spark some interest to get a developer to create a driver (if there isn't one already that I may have missed). For me personally, I have a GMC Yukon Denali and I'm able to remote start (or cancel start) my car through the OnStar RemoteLink iPhone app. It's free for 5 years whether you're an actual paid OnStar subscriber or not if you purchased your car in 2014 models or later, and for paid OnStar subscribers on any GMC, Chevy, Cadillac, or Buick built in 2011 or later, I believe. It also allows you to lock/unlock your car doors from the app, as well as many other useful features. However, for Control4 purposes remote start/cancel and lock/unlock doors would be most useful part of the app I would think. For some uses, basically it'd be great to use Control4 to start the car, and then automatically open the garage door in doing so (for me it'd be with the Liftmaster driver that I have that I'd sync the opening of the garage door). If the remote start is cancelled or times out, then it would close your garage door if you choose to set it up that way. If the car were to be left outside, or if you didn't have a garage, you could schedule Control4 to automatically lock your car door at X time, just in case you forgot. If you have a job where you leave at a specific time every day, you don't even need to worry about remote starting the car, you just set it to start at X time every morning and it's ready to go. Does anybody think this is something that can be developed into such a driver, and is there interest if somebody were to get such a driver going? JerryR
We have a 2013 Chevy Traverse w/ OnStar and that'd be a great driver to utilize. You'd probably need some programming to ensure the driver knows the car is home and in the garage so not to accidentally start the car and open the garage door if the vehicle is away from home. But in theory, it be a very interesting driver.
howieumd
The OnStar app has the navigation built in, so it knows where the car is located. I wonder if it would be possible to integrate that as part of it.
vstar
pretty surprising but it appears they have a API, wish I was a developer, sounds like it could be an interesting and useful driver.https://developer.gm.com/
howieumd
That's great, didn't realize that. Are there any developers in the US that we can get this in front of to see if they are interested in putting it together? I doubt there'd be much interest to developers outside of the US since OnStar is pretty specific to the US, I think.

thedriverslab
Hey guys, I will put this in front of my developers and see what they say. If its possible I will have them place it on the list. What functions would you want from the driver?
howieumd
That would be awesome! Just a few things that might work:1) remote start integrated, maybe under security? 2) option for two or more separate OnStar accounts, as my wife and I each have one for each of our cars that can be remote started.3) I park my car in my garage, so would also like an option to open garage door automatically if car starts, probably something more to do on integrator side since garage doors wouldn't be tied to this driver.4) At night, if home and set alarm on for the night, integrator can set the driver to send a lock door request to car as well, since the OnStar app has lock door as an option5) Would need to be tied to OnStar apps navigation to make sure car is in vicinity of your home, just for security purposesI'm sure there's other uses, but that's about all I can think of for now. thedriverslab
So just an update, we applied to GM's API program and have been accepted, however, there is a very hefty fee for the API and unfortunately the market is not big enough for us to recuperate the cost of even just the API. If someone would like to sponsor this build we will be more than happy to develope the driver. Sorry guys

thedriverslab
Hey howieumd, I don't remember off hand this was almost a year ago since we spoke with GM. It was to the point that we would not be able to recuperate the cost, their model was per car per month, it would have been about $35/40 a month for you guys. I will contact them again and see if we can work something out. If it is a monthly charge at what price point would you be interested. Hopefully something comes of this as things always change. Happy holidays to everyone.
