Best choice for black out shades with C4

Recommended Posts

Windows vary some small windows were like 600 and some bigger ones were 900, it averaged out to like 788$ a shade, I contacted 2 local reps they were within 300 of each other. That included the new "hub" product that replaced the Platinum bridge

They can either communicate through the Radio Ra 2 main repeater for Triathlon shades or the Caseta Bridge Pro for serena shades. There are C4 drivers for both through the Houselogix website and the drivers themselves are free.  For me (I have Triathlon roller shades) the integration with C4 has been flawless.

A select number of the Triathlon shades will also work with the Smartbridge Pro.

It connects over IP (preferred) or serial.   RadioRA2 is pretty complex, but it's easy to setup if you're a little tech saavy.  However, you also need to take their online RadioRA2 training course and pass the certification test (quick and easy) in order ot get access to the RadioRA2 software.  For Triathlon shades, you need to take a separate course (bit more extensive) and pass that, to get access to the Triathlon shade ordering software.   I took and passed both courses.  Getting access to their shades ordering system wasn't as easy as RadioRA2 and I had to do a little maneuvering to get away with not needing to pay for books and demos, which is also required before they give you access to the ordering software.   It's worth it though, I was able to get my shades for more than half off of what a certified installer was quoting me to do it.  Considering how many windows I have, it saved me thousands.  The installation is very easy, same with integrating them into the software.

All that said, if you're just looking for shades, then the RadioRA2 system is significant overkill.  If you're going to go with Lutron RadioRA2 light and fan switches/dimmers for your whole house, as well as shades, then it's the best system in my opinion.  I like their shades the best.  I like their light switches/dimmer options the best.  It's seems to be a very stable system for me.  Again, just my opinion on that.  It's basically a one time setup within their software once you buy and install all the hardware, then you get the free Control4 driver and have your Control4 integrator set it up from there and then it works pretty flawlessly.

If you're just looking for shades, get the Caseta hub and order Serena shades.  I don't believe you need to be certified to do any of that, and the cost is a lot more reasonable.  You should be able to order and set that all up yourself.  However, you don't get nearly as many shade styles with Serena as you do with Triathlon, but it's the easiest route for what you might be looking to do.

I would recommend the Caseta line from Lutron.  Using the Smart Bridge pro, it is quick and painless.  You can automate them from Control4 or from the Lutron App.

Cost effective starting around $400 for a battery operated shade.  The can be linked together so multiple shades in adjacent windows will go up and down together at the same time for a smooth look.

I cant find ANYONE who actually sells these Lutron triathlon shades, I like the idea of having the RA2 in my system to open up Lutron options into my system as well. I priced out the Serena ones via Serenashades.com and my cheapest window is $500 and biggest window is 900$. So still not exactly a "steal"

Thanks for all the responses. I have a problem now that my bedroom window is almost 10 feet wide and Serena will only go 8 feet wide and don't want to split it into two shades. Any ideas on a manufacturer that will do a blackout shade that large?
