Control4 access via VPN

I have a L2TP VPN set up on my network firewall that allows access to the entire network from outside. The Control4 app on my phone appears to time out when I try to use it from outside. The Lutron app works fine for my RadioRA2 switches so I know I am getting to network. I can ping the HC-800 IP address and it responds. Am I missing something or has Control4 done something to lock this down?

Do you have an IP address entered on this screen?

If you're able to ping the controller you should be able to connect. What version of c4 are you on?

I have a slightly different screen (includes account info) and Advanced Security is not something that can be selected, but IP address is shown and it can be pinged. Again, I have no problem if I am on the LAN with the App only when I tunnel in with L2TP VPN from outside the LAN.

Are you trying to connect when your phone has a wifi internet connection or a 3G/LTE connection?  I have had problems using the C4 app via VPN in the past when my phone/iPad was only on LTE.  So I put my iPad on wifi hotspot and connected my phone to the iPad and then it would work.  It seems like the app was looking for a wifi connection before letting you connect to a controller - this was a year or so but it may have been fixed by now.

Here is that thread - maybe there is something there that helps.  http://www.c4forums.com/topic/14682-unable-to-connect-to-myhome-over-vpn/

Thanks for the lead. I am trying to do this over LTE because if I access the VPN while I'm on my local network it behaves like there is not VPN. I can't try this until I get to another network. I did have my daughter try this from her network and it did not work. Will look at the post.

I just read your thread. If you edit the IP address in the Control 4 app and change it back it works over LTE. I'm on 2.7.2 so C4 has not fixed this bug or they want to sell 4sight licenses. So this is not a VPN issue at all.  Thanks again for the lead

I connect to VPN over cellular all the time without issue, up until this past Friday. I tried to connect via cellular VPN and it was telling me I needed a valid user license. I didn't think to try this trick. I know the VPN was working because I could access my surveillance system. I didn't think to try this trick. I'll try it now.

For anyone else that might get the same message I was getting (screenshot attached), changing the IP to address to something wrong, saving it, trying to connect and then changing it back to the correct IP worked for me as well. I too am on the latest OS release. a5a04c3c32ead540651eaebb378518fa.jpg

there is an issue with the app looking to connect to the controller over cellular if you do not have remote access. The current resolution is to go into the settings delete the ip address try to connect with it empty then reconnect using the local ip address of your controller.

Has there been any solution to trying to connect over LTE?  Still getting the "Unable to Connect .... 403.21) error.

I corrected the problem on LTE by opening the C4 app, changing the IP address to a bad address, trying to connect (which fails), then changing the IP address back and connecting. This worked for me. Again see the thread as follows: http://www.c4forums.com/topic/14682-unable-to-connect-to-myhome-over-vpn/

just because you can ping it doesn't mean it will work.  Ping uses the ICMP protocol.  Not sure what connecting to the control 4 uses.  I would think HTTPS but I could be WAY wrong.  You could throw a sniffer on the wire and check.  Verify those ports are open or use netstat or some other tools to check it.
