I read somewhere about someone having the "You got mail" over their speakers when their mail was delivered. I'd like to implement something similar, does anyone know what kind of hardware that would require? I'm sure it needs a motion sensor of some kind, but what is recommended? And since the Zigby mesh might not reach out that far (I haven't tested it yet), is there a wireless solution or a way to extend the mesh outdoors?

I would use a GE security magnetic sensor switch and tie it to a card access sensor bridge. They have great range.

Yep, standard contact/magnetic switch - Card Access but also Axxess Industries have option with good reach, there's Nyce sensors as well but not familiar with their range.

 

Note that with an Axxess or Card Access sensor option, plus a repeater nearer to your house (again from either company) you could reliable reach a 100ft and more - some claim 300ft and I've seen it myself, but environment starts to count heavily at that point.
