RussellB
Hi, I thought I read somewhere I could bench test controllers by plugging them into an extension cord. White and black wires into the cord then cord to the wall; is that correct? TIA, Russ
sonic30101
Would do ground as well but you can test the red output to the load with a voltmeter and LEDs work without installing them in a gang box if you suspect they could be bad
RussellB
Just confirming black and white. I tried it once and it popped a circuit breaker!
sonic30101
Maybe you were using a 2 prong cord and had polarity backwards? Should probably use a 3 prong extension cord so you can use line, neutral and ground to the switch/dimmer. Most of those are colored wires inside to help. Also make sure the red is capped off and you can use a voltmeter to test it gives power when activated.
RussellB
Yeah I think I did.... So a three prong extension cord. Black to the larger plug, white on the otherside and green to ground?
twmoonly
Black is the Hot wire and goes to the smaller prong, White is Neutral and goes to larger prong
