samsong
Hi all, Anyone added their nest protect to their control4 system ?I am wondering what kind of programming and ideas people are coming up with to make the most of it.ThanksSent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
RyanE
The integration is fairly simple, there is no scheduling functionality built into the API, so the driver can't do it, either. You can use your security panel to set the nest to home and away, can program off the leaf mode or away mode. There are a number of limitations in the driver and API, you should ask your installer what those limitations are from the driver documentation. I'm not at home now to post them, sorry. You can do any scheduling or programming you could normally do with a thermostat, like program on temperature, setpoints, modes, fan mode, etc.RyanE
samsong
Thats good info ryan. Thanks. I was actually talking about the smoke detector, not the thermostat.... But i was thinking of bying their tstat as well.... From reading your post... Do you not recommend the nest tstat because of the lack of integration ? I currently have the c4 one installed. wingzz
really after you set up a tstat what do you need to do other than change temp or adjust start or stop times, this can be done with the nest.I have one and have never had an instance where I said I wish it did xxxx.now being able to use the motion sensors as triggers would be nice, I havent looked into that but I dont believe you can at this time
RyanE
The protect integration is also pretty simple.Battery status, LED ring color, smoke and co status are about all you can get through the API, and the driver exposes those items.RyanE
Cyknight
I'd say the API Nest brought out is a bit limited and I'm not sure I'd recommend the Nest be used directly due to this - but if the unit's own functionality (self learning, the feel good email every month) is what you want, it integrates quite well for simple control functions. The lacking point is really that it goes silent when in away mode, so the ability to USE the Nest as a trigger for other purposes is limited at that point (for example, temperature/status reads to control integrate blinds to open/close making better use of the sun/blocking sun heating, a very nice energy savings issue the 'green' Nest doesn't really work for) - including for those that WANT to be able to manually (remotely) manage temperature in the house. The Nest Protect is not affected by this mind you.Note that this is purely due to Nest's API (possibly it's internal functionality) - which reminds me that I need to have a little chat with my 'works with Nest' contact. Godzilla
ive tried both, i like the c4 tstat better for now....based on how i use it myself, but i do prefer the look of the nest
RyanE
Many dealers I've talked with use the remote temperature sensor option, and bury it in the drywall. Then it looks even better than the Nest. RyanE
jillmark99
The nest protect doesn't communicate in real time so kind of a pointless driver in my opinion. If it would communicate in real time and you could program off the motion sensor then it would be worth it.
RyanE
It absolutely communicates in real time, for the items it reports. No, the motion sensor is not included in the API, which certainly would be nice, but if your Smoke or CO goes off, you'll get a notification in real time. jillmark99
My system is set up to email me on colour change as well as smoke alarm (separate notifications). The notifications do not come in real time. They come when the protect checks in once a day. I simulated a fire twice by blowing out a candle under it and the alarm sounds and the nest app notifies me but control4 won't notify me until it checks in which usually takes place in the middle of the night. jillmark99
RyanE
I stand corrected, and if it does work that way, that's more than useless. RyanE
jillmark99
^ I agree
samsong
Why did they even bother creating a driver then ?? And what is the purpose of tracking down the color change ?Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
digitaltrader
I just ordered several nest protect units in order to get alerts if a fire every occurs. I'll just return them if they don't send real time fire alerts within control 4. Ryan is this possibly just an error with the driver? RyanE
The driver alerts as soon as it gets notification from the continuous network connection from the Nest API. The code for doing that with the Protect is the same code used for getting updates from the thermostat, which are in real-time. Cyknight
I tested this, and email from C4 is withing seconds of triggering alarm. Unless I'm durned lucky in my timing...
jillmark99
Mine don't send in real time. I've tried twice with fire alarm and several with colour change and the notifications always arrive several hours later. And I have quite a few protects, it's not a single unit. RyanE
jillmark99, Are your protects battery only powered or some other configuration that would cause them to do some kind of power-saving? RyanE
jillmark99
I have a mix of protects that are hardwire and battery. Testing has been done on both. Same results. No configuration changes have been made.
angusm
Sorry what was the conclusion to this? Is it done in real time or only when it checks in?
Matt Lowe
not sure of the exact interval off the top of my head but it should be fairly quick to check and update the info. something may not be set up right. There may be an option to increase the polling time I know my Hue drivers have this.
RyanE
The Nest drivers do *no* polling. There's no adjustment for more frequent polling, etc. The Nest API offers 'REST Streaming', where a connection is kept open to Nest's API continuously. The Control4 drivers fire events as soon as they get notification from Nest's API. If the Nest API doesn't do real-time notifications on Protect events (as it appears may be the case), there's *nothing* Control4 can do about it. Sorry. angusm
Well that is a shame.
pkkaiser
Chowmain's new IFTTT maker will do the realtime monitoring you need for Nest Protect using the NEST channel of IFTTT, it would immediately fire a pushover notification that you can program off of in C4...
