Cutting the cord/cable ordered Nvidia Shield

So we never watch tv shows, except HBO/Showtime on demand, order movies through cable, and Netflix. I've kept basic cable & mini boxes because it was actually cheaper with my internet package. I've ordered one Nvidia Shield and I plan on rooting it, not worried about that.  Thinking if I get it set up perfectly I'll order one for the other TVs. (Trying to get this all figured out before football and see if we need to get Sling.) I have a synology nas, but no movies on it yet, and only some music. It runs plex but I've never used it; or kodi for that matter.

So my questions are... (1) For this set up its root , install lanmote, then have installer add Alan's google android driver & kodi full (I will only need one driver per project/ not shield correct?)

(2) Is this the path you'd recommend?

will be curious to see some responses. My cable bill has gotten up to $220/month and its insane for what little use we have for it these days. My Ooma telo just arrived yesterday, testing it out before I port my number.   Ooma gives me a land line for about $5/month - has nice integration with IFTTT apps too.  The next step is finding something to provide TV.  I am looking at the Playstation Vue to load onto my Amazon Fire TVs only because it has the local network channels and a handful of cable channels I occasionally watch.  Vue + Kodi may be all I need.  Then I can just keep my internet for about $60/month and for less than $100 I can have 40-60 channels, landline and internet.  Cuts my bill in half.  Sling is interesting due to the cheaper price but no DVR and less network TV options.  Vue has Red Zone/NFL Network too for those curious and 28 day cloud DVR for free.  Its been rumored for years, but Apple may have a streaming TV Service "soon" too and with a refreshed Apple TV hardware that could be an interesting option too.  My goal is by the end of the year to get that bill under $100 and cut out of the fluff we do not use.

I have.  lack of DVR and not all the major networks.  Vue offers those things.  All a personal preference I assume.  Sling is cheaper though which is attractive.  I am an odd ball but I need the B10 network during the fall/winter for IU basketball, B10 is on Vue, not on sling.

ha small world indeed, go hoosiers!  From Dec - Feb I need B10 Network.  Wonder if any feeds get onto Kodi for hoosier hoops?  Regardless I like the DVR on Vue as there are 2-3 network shows I watch each week so the cloud DVR feature is nice.

As for it being the 'way to go' - it would depend on what you want (and/or are wiling to pay for and/or give up).

I've played with Sling and others recently - it would be plenty for me. But not for my kids and wife, who want to have certain channels and content that just wouldn't be (easily) accessible and/or want certain function that is gimmicky (at least for them).

I did this as a trial for a few months as I was considering either dropping it altogether or possibly change providers etc.

Yeah my cable internet has been $290 a month premium tv package and 150mgb internet, 9$ jump from 50mgb, so worth it, But now I dropped to$84 for basic TV and 150mgb internet. 50 mgb internet no Tv was still 75 so worth it for me.

My daughter is 2.5 so netflix, youtube, and every disney dvd keeps her pretty content.

Biggest worry is NFL and college BB so will prob be getting sling.

Using Sling account to authenticate into ESPN's website, a cheaper access to ESPN's content.

I haven't tried Sling yet, but am trying out Playstation Vue on the ShieldTV, which also lets you use its account to authenticate to several online network TV websites.

With Playstation Vue on ShieldTV I've only had two issues, having to use a mouse or the controller's right stick and since its a mobile app, I've run across some mobile restricted shows. I would be nice if Sony would make a native app and also integrate the Playstation Vue's Live Streams into AndroidTV's Live Channels.

Do I really need one shield (in my case) per tv without a video matrix, or is the kodi accessible from other ea-1s

I have my Master Bedroom's ShieldTV setup to output over my video/audio Zone2 output (with an HDMI media converter), which I can watch on any of the other room TVs and just control the ShieldTV from the Control4's IR control.

Thanks!

Vue looks better for sure, but it might as well be cable with a 10$ discount (maybe better than that, but i really wish there was a more customized selection). I really would just want ESPN(s) in addition to my hbo & showtime..and netflix. Since I've got my basic locals on cable and 150mgb internet for 84, overkill but the 50mgb is only 10 cheaper and slower than that i lose my 20 discount.
