tebery Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 I have had a Buffalo Linkstation Live 500gb for about a year. Last week the drive when out. So I am looking for a new one. I really liked the Linkstation, but I am looking at one with a mirrored drive. Any recomendations? Thanks!
jesh Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 Maybe wait for the Netgear EVA9150 to come out. Should be in February. Not sure on it's RAID setup though.
dgbrown Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 If you're looking for a NAS, the only one to look at is the Netgear Ready NAS. Depending on your storage requirements they offer several models (attached is a comparison chart). The Duo is typically most suitable for a SOHO installation. The support is great and they have a very acitve user and developer forum. There are plugins that run on top of it (it has a linux OS) that support upnp, ftp, rsync, http, bittorrent, squeeze center, and itunes streaming. In addition there's a bunch of community developed plugins too.Any questions post'em here and I'll try and answer them for you.
jbs Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 I think the comparison chart he's referring to is the one posted here:http://www.readynas.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/readynas_comparison.pdfThanks for the tip, dgbrown, I'm going to check this out . . .
PeterM1 Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 ReadyNAS all the way, not perfect but overall the best balanced solution.
akg4y Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 I have the ReadyNAS NV+ with 4 750GB drives in it. Its awesome. Mine was in a batch that had bad power supplies and eventually died (like 2-3 years after purchase)... called up Netgear support, had a 10 minute conversation and the new powersupply was at my door 2 days later.
tebery Posted January 9, 2009 Author Posted January 9, 2009 Thanks for the info. Where did you get the Netgear Ready NAS? I will look at newegg and pcconnection.A second part to my original question:A year and a half ago I used a program called, Easy CD-DA Extractor to rip my 1000+ CD's. What are you using?Thankstebery
lakecranberry Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 I did some price checking and suprisingly the Netgear.com site seemed to have the best prices. For example the 1.5TB model was 999.99 on their site and the cheapest price anywhere else was over 1300.00.
tebery Posted January 9, 2009 Author Posted January 9, 2009 newegg.com has the diskless one for $699 and one with 2 500gig drives for $799
tebery Posted January 9, 2009 Author Posted January 9, 2009 Still another question:When I get a new NAS can I delete the old NAS and add the new NAS, or is that a Comp. Pro only feature. On that same note, I have 6 wireless outlet switches I used for Christmas lights. Can you move them to different rooms with HE or Pro only? Thanks
thecodeman Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 Adding new items /deleting items is composer pro only, not sure about moving them in the project.
dgbrown Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 Check the pricing on Amazon. Last I looked The Duo was $500 and change with one 1TB drive in it. You can add a second seagate 1TB drive after market for around $100.
akg4y Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 I got my ReadyNAS NV+ with four 750gb drives installed used on Ebay for $650. I just saw one that didnt sell for $850 and made the guy an offer.
PeterM1 Posted January 11, 2009 Posted January 11, 2009 Just remember, the 1.5TB HDs are not officially certified yet for ReadyNAS yet although there's been a couple of success stories with them (combination of right firmware and luck), a bit more patience...if only Seagate could get their act together on this one.
tebery Posted January 12, 2009 Author Posted January 12, 2009 Anyone using the Buffalo TeraStation Live? I see PcConnection has one with 4 1TB drives for $799.
thecodeman Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 Wow cheap, I remember giving almost that much for my 1tb terastation pro back in the day.
tebery Posted January 12, 2009 Author Posted January 12, 2009 thecodeman Today 12:24 PM Wow cheap, I remember giving almost that much for my 1tb terastation pro back in the day.Is 'CHEAP' the key word there?
thecodeman Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 What, with my Terastation? I was making the observation about storage prices. The terastation does everything I need it to - be a network storage.
tebery Posted January 12, 2009 Author Posted January 12, 2009 codeman, how long have you had your terastation? it seems everyone here is saying the netgear NAS is the way to go.
lakecranberry Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 I have been using a 500gig buffalo drive to store all my control4 music and screen saver images for about 18 months and have had no problems.
akg4y Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 The ReadyNAS is also a RAID5 device with hot swappable drives, ie if one drive dies you just pop that out and put in a new one that is the same size or bigger and it automatically repopulates. If you eventually swap out all of your drives to larger ones then it makes the larger amount of space available. I read some reviews on the Buffalo and decided against it.. might want to consider an HP Mediasmart server if you just need storage on a network.
PeterM1 Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 Nope, the ReadyNAS is NOT using RAID5 by default, but rather XRAID. Different way of populating parity and data especially when transitioning from a 3-drive to a 4-drive system. A ReadyNAS in RAID5 mode is actually not expandable drive-wise unless it's fully populated. So, leave it alone in XRAID mode and all the expansion goodies are there for you.
akg4y Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 Yup you're right, I forgot and was just using RAID5 & XRAID interchangeably in my post when I shouldnt have..
PeterM1 Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 XRAID or RAID5, the ReadyNAS rocks either way
thecodeman Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 codeman, how long have you had your terastation? it seems everyone here is saying the netgear NAS is the way to go.about two years now. It's raid 5 and has hot swappable drives.
