Light Switches - Alexa

Ashish

Question

Posted

Hi

I am totally new to Control4 and am a tinkerer.  I want to replace my standard light switches with something that is BOTH Alexa compatible and Control4 compatible.  I have Control4 recently installed but am doing things one by one.  However I also love Alexa with it’s voice command abiltities.  I want both the ability to say turn on kitchen light and use Control4 control to do the same.  What is the best switch that is compatible for both?  2016 some forums mentioned Lutron Caseta but what about in 2018/2019

Thanks guys.

How much do their I assume proprietary switches? typically cost for a single plate one way switch and do they work with all the common led bulbs?  Is there a place I can buy them wholesale?  And if one day amazon controls the world,  will the smart switches work without Control4?

You can only get new Control4 equipment from a dealer.  You can try ebay but there's always a risk.  The older gen dimmers/switches are often beat up a little and don't handle LED lighting as well as the newer Gen 3.  You may be lucky and find used dimmers/switches on ebay.  There's two types of dimmers.  Forwards Phase and Adaptive phase.  There's no guarantee Forward phase will work well with your LED bulbs but they are cheaper to buy.  You'll have better luck with an Adaptive phase dimmer but they are a little more pricey.  You can use a standard decora cover plate with C4 lighting.

Most c4 dimmers msrp for $200. If you dont want to do native c4 lighting you can look at lutron casetta and ra2/select depending on needs and total number of dimmers to he used. But keep in mind that c4 lights have double/triple tap and LED programing that can be done. There are a few others but the cheaper you go the less reliability/features you will incur.

Thanks for answering.  And for my last question, if Amazon takes over the world, will those c4 switches work with Alexa independent of a Control4 reciever and drivers or do they just become expensive “dumb” switches.  We live in an era of lots of flux, mergers, obsolescence and the smart home is being democratized for all.

Lol.

C4 switches/dimmers control lighting right out of the box without any programming needed. Any advanced programming attached stops working when the controller is offline or not powered.
