AS2
Has anyone used the Atlona 8x8:2 PRO HDMI matrix switch? It looks great on paper, but I want some real world input! - Ahttp://www.atlona.com/Atlona-8x8-2-PRO-HDMI-Matrix-Switch-with-CAT5-6-and-Local-HDMI-Outputs-p-17822.html

Looks cool, but at $5,500 it is out of my budget!Hopefully you can track down someone with something useful to say, unlike me...
digitaltrader
AS2 any luck in testing these units out yet? They have a 16x16 version Launching in March that sounds like a great solution. I was hoping to see some real field use feedback on the 8x8 first though.
mrcaseyb
I've used this switcher a little in my home and am creating a C4 driver for it now, I'll try to answer any questions you may have.
digitaltrader
Atlona tells me a C4 driver already exists as they have made one. You might want to contact the company. Also here is a video of the Switch in action on a 200' run of Ethernet cable switching between an apple TV and Ps3 with about 2-3 second delay: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R99wjNByefI I am pretty excited about their upcoming 16x16 with built-in LCD display. mrcaseyb
Oops, I'll have to look into that. Maybe they have a RS-232 driver but not an IP driver...maybe that's where the confusion comes from. I'm on my way over there now to drop the switcher off and say hello to a friend. I had borrowed the unit to check it out and develop a two-way IP driver for Crestron. It worked well in my small setup but with a few minor quirks that I'm told are being addressed.

Is there anyway you could list some pros/cons on this unit. Is the switching time really only 2-3 seconds as shown in the video? Can you span one input across multiple screens. What issues were you experiencing? How does this compare to the Crestron unit (I'm realize the crestron is currently the gold standard)? Thanks! diamonddesign
This discussion on the forum has a little more feedback on the product: http://www.c4forums.com/viewtopic.php?id=4926 As I understand it, the 16 x 16 is on a slight delay right now. They can't even give me firm pricing yet (just ballpark). The 8 x 8 pro is able to span input across all 8 network connections and all 8 local HDMI connections at the same time so on the 8 x 8 its possible to have 16 displays watching the same source. I had intended on buying one and running it through the ringer but now I'm waiting on the bi-directional IR. Once it has bi-directional IR it will be the gold standard (in my opinion). diamonddesign
FYI the MSRP on the 16 x 16 has been released and is $35,000.00. Probably not an item to keep in stock
srhamy
I am looking into the Altona 8x8:2 HDMI Matrix also. I emailed them a question about the modifications (See diamonddesign post http://www.c4forums.com/viewtopic.php?id=4926) to kill the IR (wrong direction for C4) and run over single Cat5/6. Here is what they responded. Of note the AT-HD88M-SR is not the 8x8:2. (http://www.atlona.com/HDMI-Matrix-Switch-p-1-c-422.html)"The only unit you can use is the AT-HD88M-SR. You can use a single cat5/6 cable with this unit, but you would have to use a 5 volt power supply for each receiver unit. Using a single cat5/6 “may” cause some EDID issues with some sources, but the application does work with the majority of sources out there, and has been used by installers in the field for residential and commercial use in this manner." digitaltrader
FYI the MSRP on the 16 x 16 has been released and is $35,000.00. Probably not an item to keep in stock Good luck to Atlona selling this at that price. No way you can justify a matrix switch costing the same as a BMW. I spec'ed out a Crestron switch and it actually came in a little cheaper (and Crestron has already proven it works).

diamonddesign
srhamy, What they told you is not what they told me. I was told by one of the project leads exactly what I posted on the other thread and he said it would take about 2 weeks of lead time to do it custom. If you are having problems getting it done that way, e-mail me and I'd be glad to help you get one that way (one being the Pro 8x8:2).Keep in mind if you do use it that way you'll need power at each receiver.
