wifi camera suggestion?

I'd like to put a wifi camera in my house that I can move from room to room where I do not have an ethernet connection. Anyone have any suggestions? No, I'm not a perv (not really anyway), I just want to monitor the contractors while I'm not home.

IP cams (or web cams as they are commonly called) get a bum rap until something bad happens then people wake-up. Don't ever think you are a sex offender (at least don't admit you are one) or something just because you may have a need for surveillance equipment.

Aside from the dime-store physchiatry (sp?), I would say as long as your expectations for update rate and possibly resolution are conservative, Pany WiFi units might serve you well. I would not bother with the Johnny-come-lately outfits that post here or those that don't fit your installer's bill of materials for the integration with C4. I run 15 to 20 cams world-wide at a price range anywhere from $800 to $2,500. So, what I can say here is that unless you are trying to read blueprint documentation at 50 feet out, the Panasonic line probably has what you need. You did not mention if you need PTZ or not so I can't make a suggestion.

Or, just follow Alan's lead on this. They just plain do what they are suppose to do once the driver is loaded. period.

[actually this is more my reply to several similar posts lately]

I don't agree that Pany cameras are any good at least in night. I have three of of 581As positioned to be able to cover 1 acre lot around the house and they are fine during daytime, but in the night they suck big time no matter what they cover. When it is full moon, you will be able to differentiate between a giraffe and an elephant due to light stone patio reflecting light nicely, but at any lower light level, you will not, and surely you will never see anything a thief would be deterred from unless the scene by camera is covered by uniform light. I have some lights during a part of the night that more hamper the camera because of the contrast issues then help with lighting the scenes.

Perhaps the newer ones (735) are better (specs would indicate drop from 0.09 to 0.04 color night lux), but I somehow think that even that will not be good enough. For that matter, I don't think Asix IP cameras are much better (I have one indoor wi-fi, btw). Essentially, for night vision you need IR and I have no clue how I would set that up together with Panys. Alternatively, you need lights and lots of cameras - I worked for a company (hmm, better say an ultra-company) using high end Asix cameras, but they put it on the roof eaves every 20ft, and the building surroundings were very well lit up.

But then the smaller the area and more specific in coverage you are and having some uniform light there the closer you are to having a Pany camera fitting your goals.

Finally, one important counter argument is that most burglaries are during daytime, and then the cheapest camera will work fine.

There needs to be some light for any camera that is rated above zero Lux (without IR) to be effective. You are correct, some of the more expensive Axis units do not have better Lux ratings than a Panasonic at half the price. This is my point.

You certainly can install IR lighting independent of the camera. Several sources for this if you look.

Please get one of the C4 dealers that asked you to come on here to verify the C4 driver. In the meantime, what do you have on the shelf and can deliver now that is small (no huge dome), PTZ, 1280 lines, less than 0.1 Lux, PoE, motion activation of the output contacts, outdoor rated and less than $500. Thanks.
