drmark12pa Posted September 10, 2011 Posted September 10, 2011 Just seeking opinions if the following 24 port ethernet switch would be a good option in a Control4 system. I know it's not a Gigabit switch but for hooking up HC 200, HC 300, or even my network hard drives (which cannot run at gigabit speeds anyway) I'm wondering if this switch would work to add some more room for ethernet in my system (I have a Netgear WNDR 4000 router and want to do even more splitting than the 8 port switch running off of this now).http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=105&cp_id=10521&cs_id=1052104&p_id=7856&seq=1&format=2
bignoze Posted September 10, 2011 Posted September 10, 2011 spend the money for a good if not great switch if you want speed in your system.
drmark12pa Posted September 10, 2011 Author Posted September 10, 2011 Any opinion on the following DLinnk 24 port Gigabit switch?http://www.amazon.com/D-Link-24-Port-Rackmountable-Gigabit-DGS-1024D/dp/B0002TPFTA/ref=sr_1_8?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1315685154&sr=1-8
bignoze Posted September 10, 2011 Posted September 10, 2011 Dlink sucks. Netgear is best for the money.NETGEAR ProSafe GS724TPSI have this one, made a big difference in my system. My remotes are very fast and ipads too. This switch let me put my entire system on one switch with POE.
drmark12pa Posted September 11, 2011 Author Posted September 11, 2011 I'm not sure how Netgear is "best for the money" when the cost is 4x that of the Dlink.... I can't imagine that a gigabit vs. gigabit switch of 2 well known brands are going to be significantly different to warrant an additional $400 cost.
nikon Posted September 11, 2011 Posted September 11, 2011 It is important to have good networking hardware to build your system on. It will save you a ton of headaches. Go with business class switches. I personally use Cisco or Dell switches, but if you are looking for a less expensive switch, I have nothing bad to say about the Netgear. Other dealers I know seem to have had good success with them. The D-links on the other hand, I and others have noticed they at times have stability issues with the system depending on the model. That said, for something less expensive can look at the Netgear switches without POE (like the GS724T) as I don't think you were looking for that feature anyway. I am not recommending any of the Netgears as I don't know too much about them, but I do think it it would be good to look at a variety of options and read up a bit on each before making a decision.

Well known issue on the Internet. No replacement from the company, either, although it was obviously a manufacturer's issue. No money saved on my part. If I had bought another it likely would have failed as well.RyanE

They go for around $100 and are great switches. It's what I use in my project.
turls Posted September 20, 2011 Posted September 20, 2011 I was scared off by Dell when I found out that a company tested voltages from them after having PoE issues with them and found different batches produced different voltages. And the business class Cisco switches are similarly priced anyway.
