4Sight required and Alexa Control4 skill
Buy a Control4 dimmer module plug in, but don't use it for an actual lamp, call it "Interface".

Create an Alexa routine, when Ring garage sensor opens, set Interface to 10. Then in Control4, when Interface changes if equals 10 activate timer garage light and set Interface back to 0.
Repeat and set Interface to different levels for other sensors.

    Thanks!

I already have smart switches so I’ll be able to trigger off of Alexa. Not sure if there is if/then in routines. Def useful in C4

  2. Thanks @RAV.

I want to automate a few things - opening the garage door results in turning on the garage light for x min

or turning on some basic lights in the basement when opening the door to the basement (if not already on).

I have Ring contact sensors on these doors now.

  3. I have the following equipment if anyone is interested. Most of it is very old but I think the HC250 and the HDMI matrix have some value.

    1 HC-200-E-B
    1 HC-250-BL
    1 SR250-Z-B
    1 HC-500
    1 HC-1000V3-EB
    1  C4-WMB-B
    1 8x8 HDMI Matrix Switcher HD-88
    1 SR-150-Z-B
    2 HC-300

I definitely need shipping to be covered if you are interested. Happy to part with the WMB, HDMI matrix and HC-250 for minimal values.

If you are local to Philafelphia then we can arrange for local pickup. I’ll be trashing this all if I don’t hear back on any items over the next week or so.

    Thanks,
    AJ

  4. I have several Kasa Smart switches and dimmers for sale. Let me know if interested.

    12 dimmers (11 new in box) - $20 each

    7 3-way smart switch kit (2-pack, all previously installed) - $30 each

    7 light switch (3-pack, 5 new in box) - $45 each

I can discount the open/installed switches. They were installed for less than a month.

If you want all or several of them, I’m happy to pay for shipping. Give me your best offer for a few or for the entire lot.

    Thanks,

    AJ

  5. On my phone it's direct play but on my TV it is transcoding. I'm going to look in to settings so I can avoid the transcoding. It's slow as hell and CPU is almost at 100%. Without subtitles its direct play.

I don't need transcoding. I was streaming to TVs directly that are ethernet-wired. Will look in to a Shield.

On my phone, this movie direct plays but on my TV it is transcoding. It may be because of the PGS type subtitles.

I use to be MyMovies then replaced that with Chowmain Plex driver of a Synology 415+ NAS and it’s perfect really, no transcoding and can play 3 streams at the same time 8Mb/s zero issues 😉

Do you have Plex running on the Synology NAS?

  7. But if subtitles degrade performance, that´s a clear sign that your Plex server is transcoding. You can easily check on the server console during playback.

Hmm! I’m pretty sure I have checked the settings. But thanks for the tip.

I will check again once I have it up and running in about a week or so.

I have been ripping mostly to ISO files and a few MKV containers.  I’ll be using Zappiti and possibly Kodi because they both support ISO.  I could possibly save storage by selectively ripping to MKV but I’m pretty much duplicating the process that the Zappiti NAS use by using MyMovies and AnyDVD and multiple disc readers for drop and load ripping.

Not looking forward to the data cleanup, but loving the drop and load.  If MyMovies collection would put the Zappiti.xml file in the folder with the disc instead of putting it in the root, it would be perfect.

What are others doing - ISO?  MKV?

I use MakeMKV to rip to MKV. Plex is easy. I'm sick of spending too much time on these things. I would rather spend time on other things with my family or on my motorcycle.

But do you really need transcoding? To which device are you streaming?

If you´re going to move the Plex server off your NAS anyway, a Shield could probably a good choice since it has a built-in Plex server and is also a pretty media player.

I don't need transcoding. I was streaming to TVs directly that are ethernet-wired. Will look in to a Shield.

  10. Yes, subtitles have a serious impact on streaming off a Plex server. At least when transcoding is required.
To what device are you streaming? If direct play is possible, subtitles are not an issue since they are rendered on the player, not on the server.

Yeah. I think the issue is that Plex server is running on the Synology NAS. I was in between homes for the last 6 months. Gonna have to redo this part. I should probably run Plex on a different server - maybe an Apple TV or Mac Mini/PC or such.
  11. What Synology box are you using and what does it not have enough power for?  I didn’t think serving video was that taxing.

I have a DS411+. It doesn’t have enough power to process subtitles in real time when streaming with Plex. I don’t have local subtitle files and the playback is severely affected when streaming with subtitles on.
  12. I’ve been using Synology NAS, Dune HD Player and Plex (also MyMovies but getting C4 interface on every TV is not important to me anymore). It works really well except for subtitles. I need to get a new NAS as the existing one is too old and does not have enough processing power.

  13. @alanchow or anyone else...

Can’t I simply add C4 keypads to the secondary locations in a 3-way or 4-way setup that trigger a Kasa Smart dimmer in the primary location?

(Obviously I would have to change the circuit and essentially make the 3/4-way setup a regular 2-way setup AND provide power to the keypads)

    Thanks again!
