danlevine
What method does this use to reboot the primary controller? Is this restarting director only or the whole device?
msgreenf
Great question! Idk, they posted it yesterday but its not clear if its just restarting services or what.
msgreenf
Confirmed with HouseLogix this is an actual reboot of the controller. The Auto Update Driver from HouseLogix will do a director restart if that is desired andy.cytexone and cdepaola
cdepaola
Great! The old EV driver that did this was one of my favorite, glad we have a new one
South Africa C4 user
As a matter of interest, what is the advantage of a controller reboot over a director restart?

msgreenf
update to this has been released that allows rebooting of all controllers and touch screens in the project! South Africa C4 user
zaphod
Is this any different than a crontab entry that reboots the machine on a regular basis?

But I think that would be more dangerous and not supportable by C4. This is doing it inside your project vs doing it in Linux.

Yes it's the same as pulling the plug. Restarting director can be used to troubleshoot jfh
saluki2007
Is it recommended to reboot the system periodically? I have had my system for about 6 months and I think I have turned it off once.

Matt Lowe
i never reboot director other for driver updates, or unresponsive. we use panamax power strips to ping the controller and internet, or any device we want and have it power cycled based on a few conditions. Kannan_g
Matt, could I understand what conditions you use (generally) before you trigger a power cycle? I'm getting an ethernet power strip (not a Wattbox or a Panamax cos I need 240v) and would like to figure out the best practice for using it. Thank you in advance
jfh
I can't answer for Matt, but I reboot the controller if (a) I have seen/detected a memory leak condition, (b) I've detected a condition I know C4 will not recover from gracefully or (b) after significant changes to the project. If everything is running fine, there should no reason to have to reboot the controller on a regular basis, though I see nothing wrong with doing so once a month or so. Kannan_g
Thanks jfh, I can manually recognise when a reboot is necessary - usually, my Zigbee becomes flaky, but the question I had for Matt was what conditions can be applied *programatically* before triggering an automatic reboot. Matt Lowe
i typically am checking for internet for the networking equipment. for the control4 it is pinging the controller on the networking no response will call for a reboot same for my dvr the rest of my equipment is shut off at night or when the security is armed away there has been almost no other reason i have needed to reboot my system. if you are reboot regularly due to zigbee issues there is most likely something else at play. poseidonsystems
Looks like I can't find the reboot driver anymore, does anyone have the c4z file?
Cyknight
Not sure it even works anymore? https://aluecke.com/2020/05/08/control4-system-reboot-driver/ Is newer, though it only allows the main controller. Personally I would suggest the chowmain one, because it forces a double press and can be used for monitoring and auto-reboot purposes.
