USB Stick Install Utility - Error Locking Device

Recommended Posts

Have to do install at location with no internet access.

Launched USB Stick Creator - chose the version I needed, input the controller MAC address and when I tried to run the utility, I got an error.

"Your USB Stick could not be created

Error formatting USB stick D:\

Error locking device: Make sure no other programs are accessing device"

I am using Windows 10. I've tried multiple USB thumb drives - same result on each.

Have not seen this error before (on previous PC) - which I no longer have. I also tried running in utility in compatibility mode (Win8, Win7 and WinXP SP3) - can't get it to work.

Anyone run into something similar before?

I've tried all - but I don't think it matters. The utility is supposed to format the USB drive beforehand... For some reason, it is unable to format...

Sorry, missed that.  I do notice that your original post says, 'Error formatting USB stick D:\'.  Another issue I've seen is drive allocation (meaning drive letter assignment problems).  It shows D:\ as the drive letter for your USB key, but would generally be for a CD drive.  You could change the drive letter of the key by the following:

- Right click on 'Computer' or 'My Computer' and choose 'Manage'

When 'Computer Management' loads, do the following:

- Expand 'Storage' and click on 'Disk Management', the right side window pane will show your USB Key and the associated letter.

- Right click and choose 'Change Drive Letter and Paths', choose a higher letter than D and make sure it doesn't conflict with any other letters.

Then try to format.

Just out of curiosity, Are you trying to drop the current Control4 OS version on the controller?  If so, the utility I use is 'C4 Device Image Updater'.  If it's different than 'USB Stick Creator' it may have a better end result.

Tried changing the drive letter assignment to E, F, G, H, I, J with multiple USB keys. No luck. Still getting the same error.

I have no internet access where the controller is located, I need to grab the latest version of the controller software so that I can update to 2.9.0. I think the USB Stick if the correct utility...

Ok. Ive moved a few steps forward. I changed the drive letters and was finally able to get the download to start as per your suggestions.

Now, im getting an error that the usb drive is too small. Ive tried an 8gb, a 16gb and a 32 gb drive (all of which are big enough). The utility is telling me that the usb drive is only 1.6 gb (even though windows is telling me its much bigger).

These are issues Ive never seen before (and frankly that i havent had to deal with). Im just trying to get my C4 system updated...:-)

thanks again

After you format the drive via Windows, not the USB install creator, what size does Windows report the drive is total/used/free?

Are these retail-bought name brand drives such as sandisk or pny, as opposed to freebie or novelty units?

After i format, windows is showing a size that i expect. A 64 GB drive showing 59.7 GB (i think).

Another update... still at a loss...

I've installed an 8GB Patriot USB key in my PC.

Windows showing a USB Drive, File System: FAT32, Used space: 12,288 bytes (12.0 KB), Free space: 8,037,39,368 bytes (7.48 GB) and Capacity of 7.48GB on Drive I:

After running the USB Stick Creator, I am getting an error saying that

"Insufficient space on USB stick I:\ to create USB Install. Stick has 3.485GB, but 6.359GB are required.

SOLUTION:

I know this is an old topic, but I had the same problem and the solution was to try a different USB drive. It might be the firmware on the USB or something that is conflicting with the Control4 creator. But I tried a 16GB thumb drive and it worked for me.

Also, to get around the lock issue; just open up my computer, right click on the drive and format the USB. This will unlock it from any system utility using it. Then try again with the Control4 creator.

Hi Guys,

I have a HC200B that has a factory restore at the bottom of the unit. I did think it's on a really old OS. like 1.x. I want to update to 2.91 as the rest of my system is 2.91. So I guess I need to restore to 2.53 first. I'm trying to create a USB restore stick using C4  USB Stick creator but it keeps saying error formatting usb stick F:\

Error locking device. Ensure no other programs are accessing device. I tried on windows 10 and 7.On a 2GB USB stick.

Any ideas?

Just in case anyone needed a solution  (I know this is an old post)  Windows 10 had same issues.  Right click, properties, select compatibility mode windows 7 and run as administrator. Got past the errors for me
