HC-800 and remote issues - new Router...

Recommended Posts

I am a tech guy and I recently did a wifi upgrade for a client. They have several control 4 remotes and HC controllers and they all for some reason do not work. I replaced their wifi system and the new wifi system is with the same name and password so all their wifi connected devices reconnected to the internet no problem. Also their HC controllers all have picked up an IP and are on the network and I can access the webgui page via the IP address to see that they are up and running, but that is all I can do.

The problem I ran into is the IP address scheme of the new wifi is not the same as the old router system. the old router died unfortunately so I cannot even access it. I have tried changing the addressing scheme to the same scheme that the old system was using, but that has not helped to resolve the remote issues.

I now have an issue where the remotes are all acting very wonky. A few of them can turn on the TV and control multiple things, but their apple tv's cannot be controlled. The wonky part is, that a few of the remotes show a blank screen, with just a signal bar on the top left and are essentially unresponsive. I've done everything I can think of to them, which is just following the control 4 troubleshooting which says to reboot the remotes, and tried that but they never get properly back up and running and rebooting the HC controllers at each TV location by pulling the power cord and waiting 15 seconds then plugging them back in. They don't show the green room name in the middle of the screen showing their connection or they will show an hourglass for a while then go to a blank screen, its like they have a good signal to their controller, but then they just stay in this state where they just don't work from there.

In the webgui I can see all controllers.

I understand to do any programming you need the composer software. The pro version of course allows you to really get into the system and make drastic changes, but the HE version I understand lets you do certain programming without affecting the core system settings. I am simply looking to try to get the remotes back to functioning. Since I do not normally deal with control4 setups, I am unfamiliar with them as I have never had one to try out and see what I can do with it. I don't have any control 4 equipment to test or learn on. My client doesn't have a dealer as the person who setup the system is no longer available.

So what I am wondering is, if I get the composer HE software and a license for example, am I able to check the IP assignments of the apple TV's and other devices, so I can ensure that all devices have the correct IP settings in the new router/wifi system? My hope is that resolving that issue of the ip addressing not being the same will resolve it.

Anyone have any advice, short of having him locate a dealer. I told him I will look into seeing if I can fix the issue, even though it is not my fault as I came in to replace a dead router with a new one.

Am I better off having him find a dealer? is this something they could remotely reprogram if I am at the location to help give them and information they need. I tried doing a dealer locator on the control4 website but their website for that function simply would not respond when I put in his zip code and country, it would not search or do anything to show me any dealers I could have him contact.

I could help remotely.  You can't configure the network connections with Composer HE.  Sounds like there were some devices with static IPs, probably configured as DHCP reservations on the old router, and now they aren't at the right address anymore so Control4 can't find them.

you can email me at ari@epic-systems.com if you'd like my assistance.  I charge a reasonable hourly rate.

thanks

Ari

TO All C4 Owners - I want to GIVE a GREAT KUDOS to Ari.

Couple of highlights -

1. He does not over-sell; Most of the dealers sell you stuff for their benefit- Reason - He did not recommend any equipment and infact got over all the systems with one old HC800 even tho I had 2 more HC250 and offfered to buy a EA3 - He said for the setup, HC 800 is enough for now and can be upgraded later.

2. Very Fast in understanding and very technical in solving issues and providing solutions -  We were unable to figure out why my projector was not working with C4 and he suggested a trick and it fixed like a charm and it was timely; He did my entire programming quickly, organized, reasonable process

I would HIGHLY Recommend him. Best to make sure you dont get deceived by these marketing guys

  • 9 months later...

Anyone reading this thread. I had the same issue DigitalHandyMan was having after moving into a new home. I reached out to Ari after reading his response....he responded immediately and got on the phone with me. The previous owner had an extensive setup and we had not set it up yet. I've spoken to 3 different dealers and then met Ari. I'm so happy that we did.

- Ari quickly diagnosed the issue, remote connected into the system, and had the entire system setup in the same call.
- He didn't try to sell me more hardware (even though he didn't agree with our router or AP choice).
- He upgraded the OS. Setup the projector. Setup the speakers. Setup the sonos to control4. Fixed the door chime.

I could not be happier. I'll definitely be using him for future upgrades or alternations to the project. I would 100% recommend him. DON'T get suckered by big box dealers.

DM me if you have any reservations about working with Ari.
