Who knows when Nest Protect will become available again.

I can assume that if you are on the old nest portal that it still functions with C4 and if you transition or start on the new google platform then it's game over?

I don’t think so no, as Google stopped their API access so even the old nest accounts don’t work.

Some advantages of integrated smoke/fire alarm:

-Additional warning mechanisms locally (speakers, flickering lights) - note that it should never REPLACE regular alarms!

-Additional ways of warning remotely via email/text/push notification to home owner or designated 'outside' people (ie warn when there's smoke at your elderly parent's house)

-Shut off HVAC to prevent smoke from traveling more

-Turn on lights at low levels (bright lights in smoke can be blinding vs helpful)

-More extreme but: activate path lighting to safe exists (floor or baseboard LEds, can even program to only lead to exists where alarm is not triggered yet)

I have combination of nest protect in bedrooms (old api still) and 4 from the alarm company which tie directly into the alarm panel. The protects are programed to activate the alarm if CO or smoke detected and not turned off in 5 minutes. Opens all the blinds, for CO turns on all vents and opens garage doors, unlocks doors, etc.

  • 3 months later...

So what's the current status of Nest Protect and Control4?

I have a very old Smoke Detector that I want to replace (not integrated into anything, just freestanding).  The Nest Protect looks like a possibility, especially if there is Control4 Integration available.  I've read that Control4 would be providing new drivers to work around the discontinuation of 'works with nest', but when I check the Control4 Driver database, the one for Nest Protect is from 2017.  There are more recent "Nest Master" drivers, but it isn't clear if these would be used with a new Nest Protect.

Any information appreciated.

Thanks for the quick reply.  I guess I'll have to decide on the Nest Protect on its own merits, since I can't assume Control4 integration is coming.

Any other "free-standing" smoke detectors that would have basic Control4 integration?  My Alarm system is old, and not integrated with Control4.  Down the road, post-Covid, I'll probably upgrade it to be able to do this, but not comfortable having people in our home just yet.

Hopefully I am asking this correctly but can you bind the smoke detector to C4 and thus program if they are connected through a PGM output?  I have 2 hardwired DSC smoke detectors that are connected to the PC1616 panel through the PGM output (to my understanding).  I would like to be able to create a text notification if they were to go off for when we are away.

Nothing wireless (without a security system) that I'm aware of. You COULD use a security one if you have a wire there to connect it (probably needs to be a 4-wire version), though I'm not sure I'd recommend it for a life-saving device.

Standard 2-wire connection on older panels if memory serves (PGM1 being able to be set to use for 2-wire smoke) - assuming the alarm system is integrated, should be possible to send whatever you want on a fire alarm situation, or at least in any alarm situation with a read-out of the type of alarm.
