Alexa control of C4 Watch TV

Recommended Posts

Hi

I have Alexa currently setup to turn lights and fans in various rooms in/off.

I’d like to take it to the next step and be able to do something like “Alexa turn on Family TV on Youtube TV”

Using my C4 remote in the family room I can select Watch then Youtube TV, which already turns on my TV and sends command to Roku to set it to Youtube TV.

Can Alexa be configured to do that via C4?

thanks

short answer is no. Longer answer is yes but you have to define each audio command you want and program it - it's not automatic like lights and HVAC

I have Roku Ultras in my Theater and Family Room.  I have added Miniapps for all the common ones we use, and configured them for Voice control with Alexa.  I have to use both the Alexa app to 'Discover' devices, as well as enable and configure them in the Control4 Customer Portal.  I've configured it such that the 'default' is for my Family Room, so:

"Alexa turn on (Netflix, Amazon, HBO Max, Disney+)" will turn on the Family Room, and go directly to the App I have invoked.

"Alexa turn on Theater Room (Netflix, Amazon, HBO Max, Disney+)" will turn on the Theater, and go directly to the App I have invoked.

I'm not sure if this is exactly what is being discussed, but this works perfectly for me, and I use it all the time, much preferring this to opening the App on my phone, using one of the SR260's, T3, etc.

This is what I do.  Took a bit of setup but works great.

Answer is yes, needs quite a bit of programming but possible and extremely reliable. This is what i have found to be the most successful:

  • I added a scenario button in C4 composer to perform a function. "Turn on THE TV" via Roku in my 5.1 system in my family room. Here is what the scenario script would look like
    • Turn on Family Room Sony TV
    • Turn on family Room Marantz AV to proper HDMI input
    • Launch my AT&T TV minidriver on Roku (i cut cable and this how watch my live TV.
  • At this point the script is created. Now we have to make alexa "Push" this virtual scenario button
  • Add the "Voice Scene" driver for amazon alexa.
    • Add New Scene Name. (This is what you will be saying to Alexa) Scene Name "Alexa, Turn on THE TV"
    • Once created, we now have to link the Scenario button to the "Alexa, Turn on THE TV"
  • Go to programming> find the Scene name ( "Alexa, Turn on THE TV")  and link the the scene name to the scenario.
  • Assuming C4 and Alexa are already working together via skills you would then ask Alexa to discover devices. She will find the new voice scene and she will now know that when the Scene name ( "Alexa, Turn on THE TV") command is given that the associated scenario button will be pushed and viola, voice control via C4 and Alexa.

See images below. Please give me feedback to improve on or any tips or tricks i should try. Thanks all.

You do not need to make macros like to turn your products On and or to correct inputs.  The C4 logic already does that.

Create your scene name.  In programming, event side, find your scene.  On the actions side, select the room name.  Select the ATT mini app as the source in the room.

Also, no need for experience button either, unless you want a button to do the same as the voice control.
