Hooking up gaming console

dlaugh

Question

I have moved homes and am in the process of merging my equipment with the existing electronics.  I am bringing an LG C9 screen, a Denon AVR-X2600H receiver, and a PlayStation 5.  The existing system has an Arcam 550 receiver in an equipment closet; it is older but the dealer swears by the audio quality.   The question for this thread is how to best incorporate the Playstation 5.

My understanding is that neither of the receivers can pass HDMI 2.1, so to get that I'd need to connect directly to the LG (which does support it).  Then I need to get audio to the receiver.  In my previous (much simpler, non-Control4) set-up, I did this via eARC.  The Denon supports that; the Arcam supports ARC.  (Either would be fine with me, as the loss of some of the top-end encoding by going with ARC doesn't seem critical.)

My dealer responds on that "ARC is not the solution because it is not a reliable solution. It is not recommended or supported by Control4. ARC can cause issues like devices turning on and off or inputs switching on their own. For that reason, it is not recommended by C4 to use in their setups. ARC can cause an AV system to get out of sync, and we would not support that type of connection with a Control4 setup."  Instead they are proposing a AV Pro Edge 8K 4x2 matrix switcher, which looks like it costs $1,200.  At that price I feel like it makes sense to look into a new receiver, as the latest gen Denon units will pass HDMI 2.1.

Any simpler/cheaper solutions that still tick the boxes?  (Highest quality video, good quality audio, low/no latency.)

Thanks, and happy Thanksgiving!

Or use the TV's optical out and a optical to Cat (and back) set to at least get surround sound back to the receiver that way. That solution would put the console by the TV (which is likely preferable due to controller range and putting in discs if you have the disc version) and would get you set up for ANY local source to at least get audio back to the surround receiver.

One would assume there is a spare cat behind a standard TV location to do this, but that would need to be assessed on-site.

Note that latency/sync on audio with this method should be minimal or non-existant if you get an appropriate set (ie really cheap brands may not be your best bet)  - or at least only depend on the anthem receiver's processing of the signal.

We use GreenAudio baluns for this http://greenaudiovideo.com/dae-300

I do this myself at my house exactly like this (multiple game consoles to a TV, send optical back to receiver for a 'standard' 7.1 setup) and have not noticed any audio sync issues (nor have my kids complained, who do a lot more fast paced games where it would directly affect the gameplay)
