Jford Posted March 23, 2010 Share Posted March 23, 2010 We completed Pre-Wire for our Concord 3 Alarm Panel, inlcuding alarm devices throughout the home.There is a Control4 dealer Pre-Wiring for a future installation of a Control4 System. His question to our Company was "What control wires will be needed between the Concord3 Panel and the Control4 panel"? We have never connected a home automation superbus module to a Control4 panel and would like verification to what we have found in our installation manual. GE states that we need a DB-9 cable between the Concord Panel and the Home Automation Panel (Control4). These panels will not be located in the same room. Question #1: Is there a distance sensitivity on a DB-9 cable?Question #2-Would you need an RS232 cable to go along with it?Question #3-Is there any other wiring needs and is the RS232 really necessary? RyanE Posted March 24, 2010 Share Posted March 24, 2010 1) Yes, you shouldn't run a RS232 connection more than about 50-75 feet. If they're in the same room, it should be fine.2) I think when they say a 'DB9 cable', they really are meaning a straight-through RS232 cable, since it has DB9 terminations on each end.3) The Automation module needs to be wired into the security panel's keypad bus (4 wires), and learned into the panel. The Automation module is then plugged into the Control4 controller with RS-232. That's all the wiring.4) Why Concord 3? jberger Posted March 24, 2010 Share Posted March 24, 2010 It's much easier to test and troubleshoot with the automation bus co-located with the Control4 gear. You just need a run of 4/22 between the alarm panel and the Control4 gear to attach the Automation Bus stuff, then a straight thru 232 cable to connect between the bus and the controller. The 4 wire method can be extended much further than a standard serial cable and is less susceptible to interference, low voltage, etc. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I read it as they will be located in the same room, not they will *not*...jberger is right, it's easier to extend the Automation bus than an RS232 bus. Use 4-wire security wiring to extend the keypad bus, and co-locate the automation module with the automation system.RyanE Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
