remote programming

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Just came across these guys: www.in-homeautomation.com. They offer remote programming, etc....Any one ever heard of them. Also, they want my mycontrol4.com login and password to access the system - will that be safe (i.e can they get in an totally screw up my network, etc..)?

Thanks for all your helps.

They probably cant totally screw up your network but they can mess up your automation system. Any dealer could, remotely or on-site.

Ask for references (as you're doing now) - but I would change my password after the work is done just to be safe. Also, if you have a 4sight subscription, you don't need to give them your id and password - I don't need it to access any of our customers that have 4sight.

Cody is correct. If they are asking for your user name and password for remote programming they might not know what they are doing since this is not needed.

Remote Services Options are:

If you have an active 4sight account: Change dealer of record on your my.control4.com account in the account section to that dealer. Then as long as you have allow remote support checked they can access the system.

If you do not have an active 4sight account: Change dealer of record on your my.control4.com account in the account section to that dealer. Then on your navigators go to the in "info" or "more" and select "request service connection".

He has not hired us at this time, I just offered to take a look at his system for him at no charge to see what he has going on.

newHTowner, I got your email I will get back to you today, we definitely know what we are doing and rest assured we backup your system project before we touch it :)

Looking forward to working with you as well.

Apparently, Inhomeautomation is not a Control4 dealer. I would be cautious about giving someone your login information, Control4 dealers do not need your login info to remotely program. Feel free to email me if you have any questions regarding this.

Hi Neil,

We are indeed a new business, and our dealer app is in process, although our business plan is not designed around selling hardware. I have run top performing multi unit Platinum Control4 dealerships previously, have served as Control4 Dealer Council member and have relationships with Control4 top level management. We are currently selling programming services. We have a staff of certified techs and sales certified employees.

Certainly anyone has their choice in who do to business with and should always be cautious, but we are professionals.

Thanks and much success to you.

I think there is a HUGE need for remote programming...

But I still can't get my head around how a customer set's this up..(not the physical internet connection or anything)...but the "political" reality of how you might get some online programming done in this fashion on top of also having a "physically" based dealer...

I Am STill confused about this. That is who actually "owns" me as a customer. And whether it would be possible to actually have two dealers on my project. One physical, and one remote..

Now I know there are a lot of dealers on this forum, and without re-launching the "old" debate...

It's just with technology forever changing and the inevitable frequent swapping/upgrading of gear, and release of things like IP drivers... if I could get a simple thing done like adding in a new device, or switching from an IR to an IP driver, done online in an hour or so after physically putting in the device, I'd do this via an online programming service in a flash...

It would be just so much quicker than waiting, waiting for a call out...

At the moment what I tend to do is plan in advance. Put several things I want done together, and get them done in one visit...

The downside of this, is the inevitable "wait" to be booked in and for me to be available at home "during office hours". Then the new device sit's there, either not used, or plugged in and controlled with the propriety remote for weeks, until the time comes to call in the dealer...

If I could do little upgrades, the odd device added, small tweeks, and that sort of thing done when I want: via an online service, I think this would be great :)

Most of us already buy services on line, use paypal, customer chat, login to work computers, ....so why not remote programming?

To be honest, this is what I thought the app store was going to be about. Apps that made a customers life a little easier by helping him/her with their system.... An "upgrade" app. An app that loads a driver for you. An app that helps you add a bit of programming, That sort of thing. Man, have I been disappointed on this one. 6 months on, and the only app that showed any potential on this front (the Kwikset) wouldn't even load onto my system...

So if Apps aren't going to do similar little "jobs" for me, why not an online remote programming service?

Of course, they are already offered. I'm sure the need is out there. But IMHO the real stumbling block right now is this "who owns" the customer issue..and how as a customer I can be convinced sharing a couple of dealers would actually work...

Why of this tough? If your dealer bitches about you using someone remotely tell him to offer that service! And if he didn't want your "local" business then find a new local dealer that does.

Great post, well thought out and exciting to think of much this industry is changing back to service! I can tell you the need is there as well or we wouldn't be here, we are helping a lot of lost people.

To answer your question from who would own the customer in your case....you do. The way our business works is situational:

1. Work for a client left without a dealer or option due to a business closure.

2. Work for a client looking for a new option due to various circumstances, situations, or time constraints.

3. Work for a client working hand in hand with the existing dealer, the existing doing physical implementation and we are doing programming remotely. (In this case we would act as advisor, not try to run the show.)

4. Work for the dealer directly allowing him to operate his business more efficiently and lower programming labor costs in certain situations.

Similar to going to the doctor, consider us a specialist, we are focusing on a particular area of your homes technology implementation.

Hey there. I just visited your site. I like what I see... :)

Is there 2 way online chat, or skype whilst the programming is being done? So feedback can be given that everything is working OK?

Thank you! We have put in a lot of hard work, but much more to come.

Absolutely, it is part of the package, we offer remote desktop chat through TeamViewer, Windows Live Messenger, Skype in certain situations, and of course we will talk on the phone old school style :)

Your my.control4.com account has a dealer of record. This is the only dealer that can access your system (if you have ticked the allow tech support tickbox). A dealer should never ask for your username and password. They have their own log in details that will work on all customers who have chosen them as a dealer of record. You can change your dealer of record should you choose to.

Note that remote support/maintenance requires either a 4sight connect or a check in (24 hour access). I hope this helps.

Remote programming and support is something we at The Soho Shop do everyday. We have an infrastructure designed internally to exceed the industry standards for remote support and programming for end users. While in the future many companies will duplicate this process and many websites may spring up we hope that all consumers will be wary when making a choice. IF a company ask you for your user log in then caution should be used. While it is difficult enough to choose the integrator that will physically install your system, even more care should be taken when choosing the company that you may never see.

As to who "owns," the customer and using 2 or more, etc., the customer can change the dealer of record on my.control4.com 5 times a day if they want. I've done some remote tech on dunes in the earlier driver versions and they change it to us, I go in and work on it and then they change it right back to their normal dealer afterwards. You could do that easily as needed. For instance you could have local Arkansas dealer X doing your install, need more advanced remote work and hire Joe and his fellows at SoHo to remote in, when they are finished you go right back to Dealer X. If you are worried about hurting Dealer X's feelings, they do not get an e-mail or anything notifying them that you've changed to remote dealer Y temporarily.

As a general rule, I would advise against using an individual or non-authorized dealer until they receive authorization and training. Certain new applicants may be a startup from a former tech from another authorized dealer but do your due diligence either way (which you are, hence the thread).

I recommend calling The Soho Shop !!!

Ask for Paul Smith or Joe Whitaker , you will be in good hands.

Paul Smith did my programming remotely. Very satisfied !

Thanks

+1 I absolutely agree!
