Autumn began a month ago, but it’s never too late to change up your decorations, especially with Thanksgiving still weeks away. There’s nothing quite so cozy as a home warmed with the bright colors of fall leaves, a cup of cocoa in one hand, and a good book in the other (sitting in front of a fireplace, of course).
    Focus on sophistication
Since autumn and winter fade into each other, it’s best to decorate for them both at once so you can be done until spring comes. Wesley Thompson, an interior designer from Annapolis, Md., described the warmer months as having “whimsical” decor, whereas the colder months are “more sophisticated and rich-feeling, as a reflection of the hibernating, nesting instinct.”
Is she saying you should think of yourself as a big furry bear, stuff yourself with food, and go sleep for the next few months? Of course not, but she is referring to the wonderful feeling you get when you walk into a warm house after a cold walk outdoors. Fill your home with the types of colors and materials that can keep you toasty while it’s frozen outside.
    Incorporate foliage patterns
One way to bring the fall colors indoors is with a nice foliage pattern splashed in strategic accents around your home. This year metallic colors are in fashion, so you’ll see a lot of grays with various tints to them. When you choose your foliage patterns, think about the principles of design. Don’t choose a lot of patterns that have the same size, shape, or texture. Some might have enormous leaf prints on them while others are very small. To change things up, try a big print on a small pillow or a small print on a large pillow. The key is to keep that sophisticated feeling Thompson spoke about.
    Find warm fabrics
Spring and summer months were made for light fabrics like cotton, linen, and jute. Colder months feel much more comfortable with heavier fabrics, however, like wool and fleece. Cashmere and velvet are perfect for rugs and window treatments. Also look for ways to incorporate faux fur into your decor with throw blankets, stools, or accent pieces.
    Bring out the candles
Whether you use them for decoration or for light, candles are great for creating a warm, fall feel. If you go with scented candles, Thompson suggested, “Scents such as French oak can often bring about feelings of cozying up to a fire.” And besides, their flickering glow was made to encourage cuddling.
