C4 can communicate with utilities?

Recommended Posts

Just read a blurb this morning in my reader about Control4 receiving a $20MM round of VC funding - congratulations C4! Its the first funding round since last year's Kleiner Perkins investment.

There's also a curious paragraph about the C4 thermostat being able to link into local utility load feeds:

It even provides a way to let your local utility to communicate with your home, so that you can take action to reduce costs. For example, the utility can send your Control4 system a signal when its load is at peak, so that your system can automatically turn down your air conditioning, lighting and other energy-hogging devices.

If these guys got the story right, its a new feature. More likely, this guy talked to one of the VC investors or board members who was boasting about a potential new feature that he should't have been discussing (at least this happens a lot in other companies). Anyone ever hear of this?
