10.5" remote will not boot

Recommended Posts

My 10.5" touchscreen remote will not work at all. When powered on, it gets past the LILO boot screen and shows the white screen with the logo and "please wait" but then does nothing for approximately 10 minutes. After that point, the screen turns black and does not respond to anything at all. Only the power and battery charging lights show up (they're green), the wireless signal light is out. Also, the white loading screen is slightly off and has a gap at the bottom of the screen. It's firmware had just been updated when it first showed the symptoms - after updating it was a black screen that would do nothing. Resetting it and restarting it does nothing either. Any way to re-update the firmware without the dealer involved? (The dealer did the firmware update).

Ive been able to clone the flash from another 10.5 then run a usb restore and blammo... all back to normal.

just for fun on one we installed windows pe, and got xp embeded to boot. with a 2 gb flash card you can put quite a few things on there. I recomend a faster flash card too like the san disk ultra 2 ones.

How did you get the drive cloned? Do you by chance still have access to working files? I've figured out how to read the contents of the flash drive from the 10.5, but writing may be risky... The only software I found that can read the drive states that writing may cause data corruption... Software recommendations may be nice. (I run Vista) Still, it doesn't work at all as is and I've already copied the files off of the drive.

If I was to install Windows as you say, would it even work with the rest of the system? I wouldn't think so - in which case all I would have is a small & slow touchscreen computer...

Could I send/upload the files and/or somehow check if the problem lies in the files themselves? Starting the 10.5 up without the flash drive works as I would expect - it warns that no boot device was found. A blank flash card just results in a flashing cursor... :D The flash drive itself works fine - at least when reading from my computer.

I have a 10.5 inch screen that was modified (by someone else) and I would like to restore the 512 MB card to its default. Does someone have the image and could they recommend a program to backup and transfer the proper control4 files? My XP laptops says the card is not formatted, I assume it is in a raw format that a 3rd party app could read, but XP cannot.

The back of the motherboard has a sticker MB MiHome C10 V1.1 if that makes a difference.

Thank you!!

It will probably difficult to get the card image. If you are familiar with Linux and had the image you could probably copy it.

I don't have Linux installed on any of my PCs. I am hoping that someone has a working image out there that could send it to me, and knows of a utility that runs on Windows XP to transfer the image to the card.

While it's possible to dd the image from a working card and onto a non-functioning card, the procedure Control4 supports is for a dealer to RMA the card, if not the unit.

They don't provide just the image to be able to dd it onto the new card.

What model is it? Is it an in-wall unit, or a WiFi (portable) 10.5"? do you know if it's a v.1 or a v.2 10.5"?

Hi Ryan, it is an in-wall unit and I believe it is v.1. I used to work for a dealer a couple years ago and I could have them RMA the card I guess. I just assumed it would be easier to get an image of the card from someone else and transfer that to my 512MB card. If no one has it or will not provide I will talk with my old company and have them get me a new copy I guess. We are still on great terms.

Thanks again Ryan, the 'dd' Linux utility worked great. I got my 10.5" in-wall and one other person's up and running. I had to take that image and then use the USB stick to get it back down to an earlier version. It is currently at 1.6. I took another backup using 'dd' and copied it to the other person's screen. Now I just need to do the same for the other devices I received. (old controller (has 4 video sync inputs and option for external ant. vs. my other controller with 6 video sync inputs and no external ant.), relay extender (old one), and a 4" POE touch screen controller). I see these other devices run off a USB thumb drive so same method should work for those. I will see if I can get images from other people I know with Control4 hardware, otherwise if you want to help me out that would be awesome.

Thanks again.

None of the other units have CF cards to pull out and get the image from.

The old controllers don't necessarily support USB restore stick functionality, and the contact/relay extender definitely won't.

The mini-touch (4" screen) *may*, if it's updated to a later version.

Same problem here. Although I believe mine is due to the power supply issue that I had.

Anybody have success fixing this?

I tried pulling the battery and Flash card, no dice. Thanks guys.

So the 10.5" V1 portable has both the CF card and a USB port? Where is the USB port, I dont even see that on mine (I checked under all of the flaps... theres a port labelled RS-232 but it doesnt look like a typical RS-232 connector.)

My 10.5" V1 boots up but says 'Unable to load navigator.' This happened after my dealer upgraded everything in the house from 1.7.? to a newer 1.7.4 and then promptly abandoned the project, leaving me stuck with a non-functional piece of expensive equipment.

The USB port is inside the unit. The WiFi card is plugged into it.

Not that I want to disagree with henniae, but. . .

Not on mine it isn't? There is nothing plugged into mine and it is visible on the network. I'm guessing there are two?

It is on the top in the middle next to the one with the reset button and I think the serial. there is a screw that you must remove - a longer than you would expect screw. then you have to pop out the cover.

I have never actually disassembled one. I thought I had read that the WiFi was USB. I am probably mistaken.

Looks like Im having the same problem as the initial poster... if anyone has a V1 10.5" and can get me the CF card image I would greatly appreciate it.. as you can see from my signature, my current dealer is terrible (and in fact has taken 3 of my dimmers from me which he was supposedly "RMAing", so I am weary of RMAing anything else).
