Programming LED color for on/off

What is the best way to program LEDs to change color when they are on/off - I guess I am trying to duplicate what happens when you bind a switch to one of the buttons of a 6 button keypad

Is it to use the folowing:

When the Variable Room->MainLight->LIGHT_STATE changes

If Bedroom>MainLight is on

--->Set LED:1 color to Green on Bedroom->6-Button

if Bedroom>MainLight is on

--->Set LED:1 color to Blue on Bedroom->6-Button

Or is there an easier and better way?

I change LEDs on my dimmers to indicate when lights are on elsewhere. I monitor when the variable light_state changes as well.
