AJ_
I have 3 CAT5e cables and 1 Coax cable at one location. I am using 2 CAT5e for HDMI and the IR bug is currently on the third CAT5 cable. I wanted to use the third CAT5 for something else. Is it possible to directly use the coax for IR or do we need some kinda 'balun' type of device.I saw the post about the IR injector for coax but I don't plan on using the coax for anything else. Thanks,AC
ILoveC4
Yes, you can, and I have everything you need to do it! If you want, I will sell it to you cheap, it was a pain in the ass to find everything. Basically what it consists of is two COAX to mini jack connectors, which gives you a mini jack connector on each end of the coax. Plug one end into your controller, then on the other end, you have a male to male problem (the coax has a male end and so does the IR bud), so I have connect that accepts two male ends, it basically looks like a two inch long gold barrel.I'd send you all that stuff for $15 shipped. I think it cost me about twice that to put it all together, plus all the running around. They're really good quality connectors, not that it is probably beneficial. I just don't use them anymore. jayace
I've never done it but if Dan says it works I believe him. Assuming you already have male f ends on the ends of your coax line, you basically need a female f to male rca and female rca to 1/8" stereo mini for each end with the female to female 1/8" mini to connect the IR bug. I don't think you can get female f to mini connectors, at least I've never seen them.Dan's price is a good deal. If anyone else needs to do it, go through Monoprice. http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10401&cs_id=1040117&p_id=4130&seq=1&format=2http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10401&cs_id=1040109&p_id=680&seq=1&format=2http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10401&cs_id=1040109&p_id=678&seq=1&format=
Acetechno
I have used ir over coax before and lots of time. I take a IR flasher, cut the wire in half and solder the coax to it and heat shrink the exposed wire. Just make sure the phase is correct or it won't work. It's funny, I once seen another company do it that way and made it work. Kinda jerry rig, but if your good with a solder iron, more power to ya and a lot less expensive than using a bunch of adapters. Good luck.
ILoveC4
I'd spend $15 over docking around with trying to solder and hear shrink the connections you're talking about.
AJ_
Thanks for the information. I already have the mini stereo plug and IR emitter for either end. I simply have to move it from the CAT5 to the coax.
