Apple gives theirs away for the IOS systems and then if you want to put something on the App store they charge 99 a year. That should be done if you want mass adoption. I downloaded the Apple SDK and wrote several Iphone/Ipad apps before I paid the $99. Being able to see what you have to work with before you pay for it goes a long way.
