Google Owned Nest is acquiring Dropcam for $555 million

Dropcam has cloud recording, "Activity Recognition" that can detect a door opening/closing, and BlueTooth LE which can be paired with an iPad for setup and be used to trigger events when other Bluetooth devices come near, which could be your cell phone, or a Bluetooth dog collar.

It seems to me after having a quick glance at the nest API, the issue is nest wants a permissions page presented to the client in order to give permission to access the API and get a token. The problem at the moment is the difficulty in presenting that info to the client.

The thermostat proxy isn't built to do this.

You would have to do it via the MyHome App, a C4 Touchscreen, or via the C4 customer portal.  It is most likely more work to handle this, than the driver itself.
