thecodeman
Interesting. Wonder how this compares with the on-demand tankless heaters.
akg4y
I think tankless ones are better, but this is a good solution for existing storage water heaters and can be installed by DIYers.Found this site, pretty helpful:http://apps1.eere.energy.gov/consumer/your_home/water_heating/index.cfm/mytopic=12760

CFUG
According to their savings calculator, I'd save $25/yr. It would take me 26 yrs. to payback. Where do I sign?
1speedjim
Yes, heat pump water heaters are a good alternative if you rely on electricity for heating water. We installed an AirTap in a utility company demonstration home that underwent a year of testing by a team of scientists from NREL. They verified the manufacturer's claim that it cuts electricity use by 70%. In our area, the typical ratepayer would save $35 a month, for a decent 3-year payback. But if your existing tank is more than 5 years old, consider a new heat pump water heater. GE or Rheem make them.
