From what I read though, these (as well as the Media Controller, 10.5" V2 touch screens and a few other legacy devices) will have to be removed from a project before it can be updated to 2.6.

It won't even let you on the firmware with them still in the project.

* HTC and MC are supported with OS 2.4 and 2.5 only as secondary controllers. With OS 2.6 they must be removed from the project prior to upgrade to 2.6.

The above products no longer have sufficient computing power and onboard memory to support the additional functionality, interactivity, and user experience expected by the vast majority of our end-customers. In order to advance the overall system’s capabilities and customer experience, these older products need to be withheld from future software updates.

This means that if you have any of these older products within a customer project, that project will not upgrade to OS 2.6 (November 2013) until those products are first removed from, or replaced within, the project. PLEASE NOTE: These projects can continue to operate on OS version 2.5 or lower without disruption.
