Down-scaling HD content

Recommended Posts

So I have a client with an older tv that's not being upgraded. Long story. It's an SD panasonic TH-42PW3. All the sources are HD/HDMI. Does anyone know of a device that will accept either HDCP HDMI and down-scale that to SD with Component? The HDFURY doesn't downscale.

Never used it but the internets seem to suggest this is the dogs and uses legally obtained HDMI keys.

But isn't the real headscratcher here that a new Panasoic 42 in Plasma could be had for about $199 more than the kludge

Ah I see it does no scaling. So do you need to spend time coding to set the device output to SD as part of the source to endpoint code for this device, which comes back to the headscratcher of the low cost of replacing this TV.

This is a specialty application. So whatever you think the standard replacement cost would be, multiply that by 10 :)

I think ill go hd fury to vga, then use this. http://www.blackbox.com/M/Detail.aspx/VGA-HDTV-Scaler-Plus/AC345A%C4%82R2

Lol a $150 device to a $399 to connect to the existing TV.

Or $399 for a new HDMI tv.

Then the old TV can retire to the weekend cottage?

KISS seems to be the way here!

Ok, I get it, you can buy an HDTV for cheap. Great. Again, as stated in post #1, and in #3, this is a specialty TV that has to be certified - which is not happening for a $400 tv and for a $400 price tag, and is not happening in this scope of work. It's not a mirror or a fish tank guys - not all of my installs are in houses :)
