Problem with:Triad 24x24 matrix and triad 8 zone power amp problems

Nick Wanerka

Question

Ok I have been trying all day to make this work, and all night looking for answers on line. Please help. Here is the problem.

I have an triad 24x24 audio matrix switch and an 8 zone triad power amp 100 WPC. I am using 7 of the 8 zones, I have an  digital coax line coming from the ea3 to the digital audio inputs on the matrix and a stereo line with rca coming from the ea 3 to the analog audio inputs on the matrix.

Then from the matrix I have red and white rca lines coming from the analog audio output on the matrix going to thw zone inputs on the amp. (Red and white) rca for output 1 on matrix to red and white input on amp. 1 set for each of the 7 zones that are in use.

In composer I used the discover tap ssid for the matrix and just double clicked to add it in my room called "rack". Which I keep hidden on the navigator. Then added the triad 8-zone power amplifier 100 from search.

In connections for the matrix audio: input 1 is binded to ea3 audio out and on matrix audio input 17  for digital coax is binded to ea 3 digital audio out. Lower down;  Audio/video outputs I have audio output 1 binded to 8 zone power amp audio input 2 and so on for each auto output.  Audio output 2 to 8 zone amp audio input 2....

Lower down; Room Control

room selection 1 RoomControl audio_volume  output is binded to family room>audio volume 2, room selection 2 RoomControl audio_volume output is binded to kitchen>Audio volume 1 and so on for each zone

8-zone power amplifier 100 WPC connections:

Audio 1 / Global input audio stereo  input is binded to triad 24x24 matrix switch> audio output 1, audio input 2 is binded to Triad 24x24 audio matrix switch>audio output 2 and so on for all 7 zones

A little further down on 8 zone amp connections the 12 volt trigger out is binded to triad 24x24 audio matrix

Further down; room Control

Zone 1 audio End-point  RoomControl  Audio_selection output binded to  family room>audio end-point 2, Zone 2 Audio end point binded to kitchen>audio end-point 1 and so on

Problem: let's say I choose the kitchen and hit listen and choose a source and source. On my screen it says it is playing and I can control volume but I hear nothing . Until I add a any other zone to play with it (does not matter what zone) amd when I do, then all the zones come on. Even though the volume shows it is going up and down, every zone is on and stays on the same volume and won't go up or down. I have to turn off the zones or end session.

So I get no sound on 1 zone or choose 2 or more zones and get all 7 on at same time. Also it does not matter where I start.  I could be in master bathroom Zone amd start xm radio amd hear nothing until I choose another zone like office and then all 7 zones are on at same sound level and cannot change but on my touch screen or phone app it says it's changing.

Please help I am going crazy.

Ps I am the dealer and it's my own house and no I have not called c4 yet because I want to be home when I do for obviously reasons. They will probably tell me to try this or want to log onto my system and by the time I get home they are closed. It's Sunday night at 11:45pm and i started this project at 9 am this morning.  You can only imagine how crazy I am going right now.  Please any suggestions

Thanks

I provided screen shots of composer too

When you turn just a single zone on it seems like the 12v trigger is not firing from the matrix to the amp. As far as all zones turning on I would double check dip switches on the back of the triad 8 zone amp and make sure all zones are switched to use line not global input, the driver defaults all to use line input. But it sounds like the matrix is not routing audio correctly. When you have time to test, on the system design tab double click the triad 24x24 it should bring up a grid. Turn each zone on one at a time and watch the input to output map. If more outputs are being connect to the given input it may be a binding/routing issue, out of date driver, or matrix fw issue. I never seen this issue myself.

Thank you for the response and yes this is crazy.  But when I turn on the 1st zone (does not matter which one it is) yes the amp does come on and all the numbers in blue come up but no sound out of anything until I turn on any other zone. Just 1 zone on and then a second (once again it does not matter which zone) but then all 7 zones are playing at the preset on volume and that's it until I turn off the 2 zones that are on.

I will check the grid in composer when I get home.  Like I said earlier unfortunately by the time I get home tech support on closed 😞

also the dip switches: I have zone 1 up and the rest down. So that all zones can receive zone 1 input

For the "Link to global input" dip switches they should all be down. Having The 1st dip switch in the on position makes all outputs use the global input (input 1). You said you have 1 RCA out of the matrix to the amp for each zone (1-7) correct?

Then definitely put all the dip switches in the off position. That explains part of what you saw, still not sure why volume wouldn't of worked for at least one of the zones. Zone 1 the family room should of globally controlled the volume for speakers connected to the amp with current config. Do you have another device that you use the listen function for in your living room / set as audio and audio volume endpoint 1 for that room?

All the dip switches except the 1st one are off. . I did try my autonomic amp and that works exactly how it should.  Hope that helps

Dip switch 1 sets all speaker outputs to use the Input 1 / Global Input.

From the manual

https://www.control4.com/docs/product/triad-8-zone-power-amplifier/dealer-installation-guide/english/latest/triad-8-zone-power-amplifier-installation-guide-rev-f.pdf

"The first switch on LINK TO GLOBAL INPUT is labeled ALL. Set this switch to On to link every output of the amplifier to GLOBAL IN (input 1)"

So I have it narrowest down to an out of date driver but how can I update the driver? I can't get it on ovrc because the last owner of the unit whom I bought it from still has it attached to their ovrc account and they won't answer me to take it off.

I found something on control4's back logs amd it had me download this c4_290_ams_firmware_patch but when I run the application that it says to run and that it came with, it then asks for the ea3's password... ? I don't have a password on my controller.

So where can I get the firmware?  Right now I am running  device firmware v1.06.84

I figured it out!!! Well I think I did, I got it to work.  I think all it was , was the digital coax line. I was running an rca red and white stereo line from the ea3 to the matrix and also a digital coax from the matrix.  I took out the digital and unbinded it and bam!!! It worked and it works great. Each zone with volume. The whole 9 yard.

The only problem now is: what I can't have any digital lines coming into the matrix? Maybe I can use a digital to analog audio converter?

If a controller ask for a password this is an old pre os3 thing for accessing controllers through terminal. Password should be "t0talc0ntr0l4!" the "0" are zeros.

If the driver is out of date from composer at the top driver->driver manager-> update out of date drivers to newest. If the version on your pc is out of date as well you may have to update the driver twice once for your pc then the controller. As far as FW for the matrix I though updating composer / OS version would cause the matrix to update if needed, I may be wrong about that. You should be able to run analog and digital into the matrix with no issues. I run dual analog and dual digital from EA5s into matrixes all the time and 99% I don't have issues.

Ok so I'd the 1st dip switch is up and the rest are down then all the zones will play what is on input 1?  Not sure I am getting it

Yes if dip switch 1 is up all zones use input 1.

I figured that  You should be able to run digital and analog and thought it was very weird when the digital line is what screwed everything up. I did go to update manager it's not on the list and has to be done either to ovrc  Or manual somehow. Thank you for that password I will definitely try that tonight. As I said in one of the others posts ( And I know my posts are way too long lol) But I cannot get it on ovrc as the other person will not take it off theirs or respond to me.  So I'm hoping that password you just gave me will work. I very much appreciate it thank you that is awesome

There are ways to guy things from OVRC but requires a gen 1 OVRC pro hub that is built on a raspberry pi (model number OVRC-100-HUB). I have one in my desk for just this purpose. You can find them used on ebay for around $100 very well worth it. From a dealer side it is the only way I know of to remove devices that are not registered to you.

Even though this is an old thread: Was there a solution to the problem?

I am experiencing the same problem: The digital connections between an ea5 and ams24 are dead - analog is still working. As far as I know nothing was changed, it just stopped working…

EDIT: I found the problem - just disconnected the digital outputs in composer under connections and connected them again. Why did this happen? No idea...
