bsanf3 Posted April 17, 2009 Posted April 17, 2009 Alarm systems at risk: UL establishes a higher security requirement for magnetic switcheshttp://news.cnet.com/8301-1009_3-10129012-83.htmlMy old X10 based system used these type of switches, fortunately when I upgraded to Control4 and a new Security system it uses a different type of contact.Byron
akg4y Posted April 17, 2009 Posted April 17, 2009 Im more worried about the guy with a rock breaking a window and getting in, ie the kind of person deterred by the security system sign and the barking dogs This seems like something the team from Ocean's Eleven might know though... good thing I dont have any Mona Lisas. Thanks for the info though, good to know!
bsanf3 Posted April 24, 2009 Author Posted April 24, 2009 For the windows I'm planning on getting 3M's Window Security Filmhttp://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/WF/3MWindowFilms/Solutions/Residential/?PC_7_RJH9U5230GE3E02LECFTDQGGG7_nid=NCDJ14LQVPbeT4DCJBL6BVglVideo Demo
RyanE Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 They showed that security film being used on one of those 'we'll break into your house, then show you how we did it and help you secure it' reality shows.Looked pretty cool, although expensive, from what I remember.RyanE
lippavisual Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 Ryan,I think the show you are talking about is "To Catch a Thief" on the Discovery channel. That show is pretty cool. Just about every other episode, they take baseball bats to that 3M window film and it always amazes me.
RyanE Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 Yep, that's the one.Kind of fun, but it's not as much fun having to watch the homeowners watch their own house being burgled and having to watch their reaction.RyanE
Mav-Jason Posted April 25, 2009 Posted April 25, 2009 Entertaining show! Haven't seen it in a while though... guess it's still on?
RyanE Posted April 25, 2009 Posted April 25, 2009 I don't know. I usually have that setup to record in MythTV, but it hasn't recorded in a while, which usually means it's not on anymore.RyanE
akg4y Posted April 25, 2009 Posted April 25, 2009 How easy is this to install without making your windows look crappy?
RyanE Posted April 25, 2009 Posted April 25, 2009 On the show, they've brought in a company that does this, it looked completely clear when they were done, but I don't know, because I've only seen it on TV myself.RyanE
jbs Posted April 25, 2009 Posted April 25, 2009 Most national window companies offer this type of film protection as an option. Florida building code actually *requires* something like this to protect from hurricanes, so if you look into the specs for the manufacturer's version of Hurricane Windows it will likely include this protection.--Jason
lippavisual Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 I do know that it is applied the same way as window tint!
