Control-IT
What is the best way to get SmartTV audio back to an AVR? Will using the HDMI ARC work or do I have to use the optical out back to the receiver? The ARC would be a require less hardware but will it work in C4? sonic30101
Optical is better since you dont rely on having cec and hdmi control turned on in the equipment which can have adverse effects. That and the audio quality will likely be the same
chopedogg88
agreed, optical is better but ARC may work in a pinch, if you have no way to run optical.
Crustyloafer
I agree on the ARC, try to avoid where possible, not reliable at all and needs to have HDMI CEC enabled which opens a whole can of worm when you have a control system in place. Have you got a CAT5/6 cable to the TV from the AVR location? We use these on most jobs for audio return back to the audio matrix or AVR in a rack: https://www.blustream.co.uk/cat100au Digital coax and optical input at transmitter. Transmitter powered from receiver end over CAT cable so no power supply needed behind TV. Receiver has built in DAC so can output put native digital coax or optical and output 2 Ch. analogue conversion of other of those digital feeds. For those in the US, where Blustream is not distributed, they are OEMed for Xantech by Blustream for the US market and this is the same device: https://www.xantech.com/product/audio-over-cat-cable-built-dac-XT-CAT-ARC-KIT

ERDrPC
I'm waiting for the eARC so we can send Atmos back to the central area. Are there any extenders that do full lossless audio over cat?? I was going to buy now but want to wait as I'm going to start to use my Sony TV apps
