djheijs Posted September 1, 2019 Posted September 1, 2019 Anyone have experience with these? Would 1 or 2 be enough for a 3800 sqft house? They claim 3000 ft range. Right now I’ve got 5 Cisco 1850 access points, but somehow my iPhone and iPad drop off frequently which is driving me up the wall. I’m guessing one needs to be a dealer to set these Pakedge access points up? Any other ideas to improve Wi-Fi with my current setup appreciated
-defunct- Posted September 1, 2019 Posted September 1, 2019 3800 sq ft house I would ideally have at least 4-5 APs depending on material between rooms (if concrete, then I would use more). Where are the current APs? Is the broadcast power turned up?
-defunct- Posted September 1, 2019 Posted September 1, 2019 Is the drop while walking around the house between APs or while sitting in a single room?
djheijs Posted September 1, 2019 Author Posted September 1, 2019 I have 1 access point in my basement, 1 on the 1st floor and 3 on the ground floor, in my garage on one side of the house, in my kitchen in the middle and back of the house, and finally one in our den at the other side of the house at the front. Drop happens when moving through the house or sitting in a single room, in particular our living room which is next to the kitchen and closish to the garage.
-defunct- Posted September 1, 2019 Posted September 1, 2019 The drop would likely be roaming issues. You would need to get a set of APs that handle roaming very well. The WA-2200 and recent firmware for the WK-1/2 should be able to do it. The other solution is to get Ruckus Unleashed or Cisco Meraki
djheijs Posted September 1, 2019 Author Posted September 1, 2019 Thanks, @Dunamivora, I will investigate those alternatives.
djheijs Posted September 1, 2019 Author Posted September 1, 2019 A Ruckus access point is on its way!

These should be good APs and very popular. I'd first make sure your Cisco is running latest SW versions and all the setting for roaming are selected. You didn't say, but is each AP hard wired back to a switch?
djheijs Posted September 2, 2019 Author Posted September 2, 2019 Yes, they are all hardwired and are running a recent version of their firmware. Roaming is enabled per Cisco’s Best Practices instructions which specifically mention Apple devices.
djheijs Posted September 2, 2019 Author Posted September 2, 2019 Even right now I’ve been dropped off the Wi-Fi even though I’m not even moving and sitting on a chair with an access point directly underneath me.
LollerAgent Posted September 2, 2019 Posted September 2, 2019 Sounds like you have other issues. Have you tried to coordinate broadcasting frequencies between all of your AP's?
djheijs Posted September 2, 2019 Author Posted September 2, 2019 Cisco Aironet is supposed to do this. I do indeed see that the access points have non-overlapping channels.

djheijs Posted September 2, 2019 Author Posted September 2, 2019 Should I make them all the same or all different?
-defunct- Posted September 2, 2019 Posted September 2, 2019 This may help: https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/controller/technotes/8-1/1850_DG/b_Cisco_Aironet_Series_1850_Access_Point_Deployment_Guide.pdf
-defunct- Posted September 2, 2019 Posted September 2, 2019 Ah, that didn't link the exact page I meant. There is a section on configuring optimized roaming.
Time2Jet Posted October 14, 2019 Posted October 14, 2019 Should I make them all the same or all different?I’m about to unwittingly hijack. (I realized after I typed all of this). Has anyone answered this query? Should all of the WAPs be set to the same channel (per freq)? Or should they be different. Right now, in my case (with issues) I have the 2.4 set to 6 on all of the 4 WX-1’s and the 5ghz all set to 148 (I’m not in there to look at the exact channel, but it’s in the 140’s). I do not have band steering enabled and I have disabled STP. In my case, this setup seemed to at least function (albeit horribly). Changing any single one of those things seemed to basically render it unusable. But I’m still open to trying things. As for power, I believe they’re all set at 18 on the 2.4 and 13 on the 5ghz. I have other issues (potentially a bad cable run), but I can use the system at least until I get it working (non-Pakedge techs are coming Thursday). No one supports Pakedge in my area.
