New house retrofit questions - part 1

Recommended Posts

Bought a home instead of building. I have a lot of questions, and rather than sticking them all in one post, I'll post each category separately.

First is an alarm system. I have to have a monitored alarm for insurance reasons. I own a Ring alarm, and the $99 yearly fee also gets me remote access/DVR to my ring doorbell and all things Ring. For what that's worth.

What I need: We live on a lake and have grandkids (toddlers) that visit. Perhaps I don't need an alarm for this, but I want door sensors so that if a door is opened I get a chime and can program it to turn on the lights at night or flash the lights in my shop.

Not really concerned with the break-in aspects of an alarm system. (Knock on wood)

I have no idea if Ring can be integrated, as I never setup C4 in the cabin.

Open to suggestions. Thank you.

Part 2 - Lights and shades

Can you mix Lutron Caseta and C4 okay? We have at least 3 or 4 locations where we need a new switch that would be.a 3 way. "Mama Bear" liked the instant gratification of sticking up a  Pico remote where she wanted it so much that she's over the aesthetics. Pulling a traveler is out of the question anyway. So considering solving these issues with Picos. Which I'm assuming I'd have to have an actual Caseta dimmer to control the load. Or could I make the Pico control it via code?

I'm 99% sure she has decided on Serena roller shades. So these integrate well with the existing smart bridge pro that I have, correct?

Has anyone got any experience with battery powered Serenas on a door? It's a faux French door and the shades will need to be mounted actually on the door. All the batteries are integrated in there behind the valance, right?

Part 3 - Boat House

Okay to put C4 dimmers/switches in a protective cover on a boat house? Are these things humidity sensitive? I'm going to have some extra Lutron switches and dimmers, maybe use these instead since they're cheaper to replace if they fail?

Zigbee and ClearConnect range? It's about 100' to the boat house with direct line of sight from the house. Definitely want the lights integrated into the system. If I have to get another Smartbridge Pro, if it is on the same network, it'll integrate correct?

There is electricity by a pump house half way to the boat house. Would a C4 switch there be enough to extend the zigbee mesh?

Part 4 - Rackless Audio Distribution

While there are nice locations for me to put my AV/C4/network rack, there is no way to run speaker wiring. I think I will be able to use in-wall and in-ceiling speakers in the family room when she pulls the old carpet in the room above it. But everywhere else is either inaccessible or it isn't needed.

On the bright side, there are wall plugs galore. Never seen so many in a house. So I could do wireless and never be far from power. Even in-wall wireless would be an option in a lot of areas.

We are 100% Airplay. They'll use apps on the AppleTV, but other than that, they will Airplay from the Music app, iHeart, Spotify and Pandora apps. Nobody in 4 years ever used the C4 app but me.

Not sure how to go here.

Caseta is very easy to integrate into C4, as long as you have a Lutron Smart Bridge PRO in the mix.  We have Pico remotes all over the house to do things where we don’t have cables, and we have some Caseta light switches too.  You can trigger anything you want within your C4 system from either the Pico or the Caseta switch.  Simple code.  You can also add the Caseta loads to Advanced Lighting Scenes just like a normal C4 load.

If you don't care about controlling any A/V EQ you can do a CA-1.  Lutron Caseta (Pro Bridge) is 100% with C4.  I did it myself because you can adjust the schedules with the Lutron app. although Control4 release "Essential" lighting that is half the price and extends the ZigBee range.  You can add NYCE door/window contact sensors to any door that will allow text and email announcements an much more.  I have mine set up if the kids open certain doors during certain hours that I get a text, email and my speakers play a tornado waring sound along with lights flashing.

For the locations you can't run speaker wire you cam use the Triad One that connect Wi-Fi if need be.  I do suggest have your own router with Wi-Fi or your own wireless access points so they always see the same Wi-Fi.

All the streaming apps. you mention are native to Control4 but Spotify is a pain.  All should work fine as long as you do not use a Mesh Network.

Yes, the batteries are in the headrail and we mount Lutron Shades to doors all the time. I have mine mounted to our french doors that way.

Be careful of door handles when measuring. I can help you with this if you like.

I will send a picture and our measurements. If she can pick a color we plan to order immediately. Thanks.

One Smart Bridge Pro per system.  Plus one Caseta Repeater if you need it, and one Plug In Dimmer can also act as an additional repeater.  75 device limit, but I seem to remember someone here has figured out a device limit workaround, by adding the RA2 Select driver into the project in addition to the SBP.
