  1. Yeah my dealer just seems very hesitant for some reason, though I'm sure they could figure out how to do the things you mentioned above in case I can't

    One related question - regardless of what new hardware I get, if I create my wifi network with the exact same SSID as my current network, will that allow all devices in my house to automatically connect to the new network without any configuration?

  2. My dealer is still very hesitant about Ubiquiti and again are recommending Eero, saying that I would still use my same Araknis switches with a new Eero Gateway and Eero POE Access Points

    My question - would a lay person like me be able to switch out my Araknis components with Ubiquiti hardware on my own and then use the app / website to setup everything? I could of course use YouTube...looks like there's lots of tutorials on how to do the setup, etc.

    I'm just not sure if I'd screw something up along the way, esp any remaining C4 integration I have with my network as well as other Araknis router configurations that my dealer had setup with my different wired and wireless hardware, like setting up static addresses, etc.

    • Microcenter is great, but I'd suggest purchasing directly from Ubiquiti. Ubiquiti forces users to go through the retailer for warranty service.
    • You most likely want the UDM-SE. The marginal price difference vs. UDM-Pro is not worth worrying about. If nothing else it has 2.5Gb WAN, which should be a minimum spec by now.
    • If you are expecting to take advantage of high capacity of newer Wifi 6E and later (most people won't) you'll need an Enterprise switch with 2.5Gb ports.
    • Ubiquiti uses 2 chipset manufacturers for their WiFi access points, MicroTek and Qualcomm. Some say mixing the 2 brands can cause issues. Qualcomm chipsets are newer and better supported by the chipset manufacturer. The ceiling APs with Qualcomm chipsets are U6-Pro and U6-Enterprise.
    • The company seems to be on a better track with reliability of firmware. It's not hard to get the system working reliably. But it is also not hard to get it to be unstable if you make a configuration mistake.

    We've had on again and off again wifi issues for awhile now so that is one reason - to hopefully blanket the house with better wifi coverage

    Another reason is a few ports on the switch (POE switch) have died - I guess got fried somehow but I'm not sure

    So, instead of getting another Araknis POE, I'm thinking this may be an opportunity to just change out the whole system to newer hardware from a different company

    I'm possibly combining this network upgrade with more A/V upgrades (new TV in our 'media' room, different audio solution, etc.) so would like to do it all in one fell swoop rather than doing the A/V upgrade and then later on the network, etc.

    My dealer is not as familiar with Ubiquiti and is suggesting I consider Eero if I want to replace my network hardware - I don't know much about Eero so will look into that as well

    @TundraSonic I'm actually using SecuritySpy with an always on Mac mini with Amcrest cameras - it's rare to run into someone else who knows about SS!

    I love SS but was just thinking if I do make the switch to Ubiquiti it would be nice to have everything (ie, including the cameras) on a single platform

    I have one Unifi camera (G3 Flex) that I have on SS as well

  6. My local Microcenter seems to have adequate stock of Ubiquiti items to make replacing my Araknis hardware a local affair (ie, no need to order online, etc.)

    I'm looking to do a one to one switch out of each component so looking for guidance on what Ubiquiti component to pick for each one of the following Araknis network components

    Cameras x 5 (currently using Amcrest, but thinking of swapping them all out for Ubiquiti and considering the G4 bullet at $200 each) - so what Ubiquiti component would I need to serve as the NVR / DVR if that functionality is not built in to one of your suggestions to replace the above already?

  7. Having wifi slowness and dropouts on M1 MacBook Pro and M2 MacBook Air but not M1 MacBook Airs or any other devices

    Been trying to figure out what's going on and came across some information about changing the default MTU of 1500 to 1453 (I don't understand the reasoning why)

    I'm at the point that I'll try anything so looking for some guidance on whether I should change it on my Araknis 310 series (and how) or to just change it on the affected Macs so as to not mess up other devices that are working fine

    Also came across something about making sure the router firmware is up to date (it is...my dealer updated it last week) and to see if there's a 'WPA3 / WPA2 transitional' setting in the router to change to

    So here's the timeline of outages since yanking those Nest Hubs out of my system; prior to removing the Nest Hubs, the outages were pretty much a daily, constant occurrence and many times multiple outages in a single day

    March 26 removed Nest Hubs

    April 12

    April 26

    May 1

    May 14

    May 15

    May 16

    May 30

    June 13

    Sept 22 x2

    Sept 25

    Sept 29

    Oct 2 x5

    So, other than the anomaly in mid-May, the outages dropped to maybe once every couple of weeks and then slowly decreased and, as you can see, from mid-June to late Sept had completely gone away

    It all started up again a little more than a week ago. As far as I can tell, I didn't add anything new to the network except for upgrading my wife and kids' iPhones, but that was on Sept 10th and the outages didn't start until the 22nd

    No other new hardware other than the iPhones

    Yesterday was the worst day so far with multiple outages for which cable modem reboots worked to get the network back up except for last night where I had to reboot the modem and networking hardware multiple times before it came back up

    One thing I just happened to notice was a notification from the Screens/Screens Connect app I use on my Mac to remote in to it from time to time - there was an exclamation mark in its menubar icon that basically said that there was a 'double NAT issue' and referred me to this link:

    I haven't noticed this before but I haven't usually been on my Mac when troubleshooting the outages - I'm usually using the xfinity app on my phone to reboot the modem and/or the OvrC app to reboot the networking hardware or I'm manually rebooting (ie, unplugging/plugging), so I don't know if this double NAT notification always comes up when the outages occur, I'll have to check the next time there is an outage

    I did some research and ran a 'traceroute 8.8.8.8' command from my Mac's Terminal app and, as far as I can tell, the first hop is a private IP address and the second hop was a public which, if I understand correctly, is the way it's supposed to be (however, I did this once I was able to get the network back up and that double NAT notification was gone, so not sure if that's a valid test)

    Anyway, any thoughts on this double NAT issue? Again, my understanding is that this means that there is some device on my network that is acting as a router and that is causing a conflict with my actual router

    I can't, for the life of me, figure out what device this could be if this is, in fact, the cause of the current issue

    My cable modem is a modem only, it has no routing capability and, again, no new hardware has been recently added

    Every time these outages have been occurring since last week, I've also been checking with Comcast/Xfinity (as well as actually looking at my modem) and it doesn't seem to be an issue from their end

    Could there be a software issue that can cause a double NAT situation? Like some kind of software that can serve routing functions causing the conflict? I'm just grasping for straws at this point....

  9. May have finally figured out the culprit, fingers crossed - Google Nest Hub

    After disconnecting my touchscreens over a week ago and the network still going out, my next step was to unplug our 2 Nest Hubs, we have a regular and a Max

    After doing that I also searched online and it seems they had an issue back in 2018 where the chromecast feature was overloading routers when the device would wake from sleep, I don’t remember all the technical terms

    Anyway, Google said they fixed the issue and in the meantime I think router manufacturers started pushing out firmware updates to prevent the issue

    This was 4 years ago so I would think that my devices would have already been fixed by Google and/or Araknis would have addressed this as well

    Regardless, though, all I know is that it’s been one week exactly since I unplugged the Nests and the network has been rock solid - hope I didn’t just jinx it

    My dealer is supposed to get in touch with the Araknis folks to see if they can shed any light on this too

    Just thought I’d share the (hopefully) good news, after almost 2 years (or possibly even longer…I can’t remember exactly when all this started) of dealing with this
