    Better?

    https://www.wireandcableyourway.com/belden-121700a-24-4pr-stranded-cat5e-datatuff-armored-twisted-pair-cable

Didn't look too closely at the original link, wasn't suggesting supplier.

There's dual cat versions out there as well, usually you're looking under industrial cabling

Thanks.   That is cool and indeed a better price...  I think it would be cheaper though to get a DiTek and just ground it.

Burial fiber often has a locator wire in it so its not the silver bullet for lightning protection.

You can save some money with one of these:

    https://store.ui.com/us/en/collections/unifi-accessory-tech-poe-and-power/products/ethernet-surge-protector

I'd just get regular burial cat6.

Thanks, I had already purchased a spool of Ubiquity Outdoor Shielded Cat5e so will run that as they were not super long runs to the attic switch and dont think I need Cat6 speeds for this application.

That’s how we did it but ran through conduit to the pool house (about 200’ I think) and cat6 to pool controller, WiFi AP etc. generators are in a different location but also through conduit. Our exterior runs (these plus cameras) run through a bunch of rack mounted surge protectors that work great. Never had an issue with any of them.

Thanks, i was going to run the cat 5e in a conduit as well for protection.

The DiTek works great.  We use them all the time when we transition from outdoor to indoor.

the Ubnt one’s have failed for us several times.  You get what you pay for!!

Thanks for the advice, I wasnt familiar with the DiTek but it looked a lot more robust than the Unifi and you only have to run one ground wire to the outside for multiple ports.   I will likely place also on the exterior wall a Ruckus T310 since I'm pulling the wire anyway it's nice to get a better wifi signal outside as well.

At this point of time, if you want WiFi 7 at maximum performance, you realistically need Fibre anyway. I'd be running fibre if there is power at the other building, simply because its a similar cost these days anyway (provided you're using 2 switches with SFP, which in general is likely) You can also quite easily run many cores simultaneously too for future use

Thanks, this is not running to another building per se, its just running down an outside wall to devices that dont require high speed.

I normally hear advice to use fiber when running between two buildings if you are worried about lightning strikes.  Fiber doesn't conduct electricity.  But then you need a switch that can take fiber or a way to convert back to ethernet.

Thanks, I read that also but not practical in this application for the points you note.   I'm not overly worried about lightning but want to do what i can practically on the front end to reduce the risk.

  7. Hi All,

I'm running for the first time a few network cable runs to my pool controller and future backup generator from my inside home network.   My current plan is to you run outdoor rated shielded Cat5e from the outside equipment up my brick exterior wall through my soffit into a switch that is in my attic crawl space.   Before the switch, I was going to insert inline one of these:

    https://www.amazon.com/Ditek-DTK-WM4NETS/dp/B07NCRR4HB

Then run a grounding wire from the above device back outside down my wall and bonded to my grounding rod nearby.    I'm mainly trying to protect a lighting surge travelling through the cable into all of my networking equipment.   Is this an acceptable approach or any other suggestions?

    Thanks in advance!

  8. Hi all,  I have a Doorbird front doorbell integrated into my C4 system and see no benefit of having my phone ring by my Control4 app every time someone rings the doorbell.   Can someone please advise how to turn off this?   I seem to recall previously you downloaded an C4 separate intercom app but now it  seems it's all integrated and I cant find a way to toggle off these notifications.  ps I do like the C4 integration so my home touchpads get the notification but not my phone.

    Thanks in advance!

Thanks for that insight.  Had started to spec out an upgrade of my service from ISP to 2.5Gbps and the associated router, switches and Ruckus WIFI 6 AP's.  All of my entertainment source and end devices are wired with only having laptops and phones wireless.  From you opining, worth waiting for Wifi 7 whenever Ruckus releases those products or safe to proceed with what's existing?  I'm on Wifi 5 now and mostly satisfied with the wireless here although did get a spot review done and found recommended to add an outdoor AP and one more indoor AP.  Using Araknis for the AP's but going to Ruckus going forward

I have Ruckus Wifi 6 APs and they are blazing fast.  I would think only if you have a lot of band interference, Wifi 7 wouldnt give your use case a lot of benefit for the cost.

or you just login to the Router UI and see everything...I don't understand how that is any different? its your hardware, ask for the password and login

I was referring to a couple of dimensions, 1) Cloud Access / GUI for those that find this important and 2) the quality and details of the GUI while accessing within the local network.   As a contrast, I love Mikrotik gear but their routerOS GUI is much more complicated to navigate for an average user....

Yes, I'm the end user. I have got access to ovrc but I can't see any devices in there. As an end user I should be able to see all the devices and also do basic management?

This is why I'm a fan of the Unifi controller and user interface,  you don't have to be worried about what the dealer has chosen for you to see...

What's the group recommendation on ceiling fans these days?

Client wants rock solid reliability (Control) above all else.  He's looking at the Haiku Gen 4, but it does not appear to be wifi as the other Haiku models?  Would their wifi module work with this?  Does the C4 Fan Speed controller work with these fans?

Please post your ceiling fan picks!

    Thanks!

    Neil

I've been happy with my Chowmain driver and Haikus... I have one Modern Forms but prefer the Haiku.

In regards to big ass fans, I think we've only ever had 1 or 2 support tickets for it. It's an incredibly solid product and driver

I have V1 and V2 fans with the Chowmain driver.   When I use the Haiku app from time to time it wants to upgrade the firmware of the V1...  Will this create any issues with the driver?  Thx

    Too late for that 😉

I actually find the Neo quite easy to understand and program. At the moment I don’t think I need alarm.com. And if I ever do I can do a dual path or I think AlarmSystemStore mentioned they have a way to do third-party monitoring with Neo and C4 not via alarm.com.

Agree, Also an internet based monitoring service has a lot of gaps in a serious security system given how easy it is to cut the internet feed on most homes.   I just use cellular at the panel with a batter backup and C4 connectivity just adds a ton of convenience in managing (when the alarm is not going off).

You might just give them access to the router and they can control who has access (i.e. allow only known Mac id's on the network) and give them wifi access point access as well.  You can always get access back later doing a factory restore if they leave without turning access back over.  Or if you don't want to do that, have them put their own router in, etc.

Thanks, they are going to put their own ISP supplied wifi router after they move in.
