  1. I was able to test 3.4.2's fix for remote connection of Composer HE to both properties with C4 and can confirm that it is working again which is a great fix! Note that you need to have separate licenses for HE for each property. Thanks to @msgreenf for upgrading me and helping me work through this over the last few weeks!

  2. I have a C4 adaptive phase dimmer connected to a hue downlight. I want the dimmer to maintain power to the load when the dimmer is in the off position so the hue bulb stays active. My question is: is there a software setting that can do this or do I need to wire the dimmer accordingly?

Right now, the dimmer continues to control the load despite what seems like the logical settings: physically the dimmer is wired as normal with the load wire of the dimmer able to control power to that light. In Composer HE, I have the dimmer properties set so "buttons control load" is not selected and "use as a 2 button keypad" is selected. In programming, pushing the top of the dimmer activates an advanced lighting scene that controls the bulb and pushing the bottom of the dimmer toggles that advanced lighting scene.

Have I misconfigured things on my end or is there a setting maybe in Composer Pro in connections that can divorce the button press from the load to maintain power? Or is this not possible and I need to just physically remove the load wire from the dimmer and connect it to the line wire so it always has power.......

If you are meaning the actual outlet itself (like hard-wired), Kasa doesn't make any, just plugins and strips. If you need an actual outlet, I am not sure of any that are directly compatible with Control4, but some may work with the Core controllers using Z-wave. I know a lot of smart outlets use Z-wave, so I would think some would be compatible with the new Core controllers.

That's too bad that they don't make a UK version of their US in-wall outlet - we have several and they work very well. Hopefully a version of it gets to the UK soon.

Sure, but i meant can you initiate the ping back through the tunnel from the remote site to the local site, i.e to the laptop running HE. The trouble you are describing is a classic routing issue. The remote option within HE relies on the gateway. So do successful VPN connections. This suggests to me an area common between them that i would begin to investigate.

I see thank you I'm sorry I misunderstood that was a good idea but I am able to ping from the remote network into the computer running composer so I don't think that's it

If i ever encounter a comms problem like this, i find often the best way forward is to go back to basics and begin by ruling things out. In this case, are you sure that the remote location is able to communicate back to your network? VPN traffic relies heavily on routing so even though you can communicate one way, it does not mean that the route back is open. This can be as simple as an incorrect gateway configured on the other side or (more complex) firewalling. Ideally, opening up a terminal session to the controller and pinging the laptop HE is running is a good enough test or alternatively, another remote device on the same subnet to test from.

Thank you for you message - yes I've confirmed that I can ping the controller (and all other devices) at the remote location. Importantly neither local nor remote works - in Composer HE if I try to connect to the remote property using the remote option that doesn't work, and if I try the local option Composer HE sees the remote controller locally but won't connect. When I go to the remote house physically and sit on that network I can connect fine locally to that controller so I know the remote house controller is fine. If this was simply a vpn issue it would make sense that I can't connect but the fact that both remote and local options don't work in Composer HE for a remote site makes me think there's more going on than just a network settings issue because the remote connection should work regardless (and it did perfectly before the 3.4.1 update so that again points to more than a bad network setting I think).

  6. Unfortunately it still does not work for a remote site for me. I cannot connect to our vacation home from our primary residence despite both locations being fully updated and running the newest version of Composer HE. It doesn't work using the remote option and it doesn't work using the local option (the homes are connected through a vpn via Unifi Site Magic configuration). I'm running Composer HE in parallels on a Mac. When I try the local connection it just fails. When I try the remote connection it just hangs saying it is connecting. Over the past couple weeks sometimes I got it to connect but mostly not just very unreliable but this morning I have spent over an hour fiddling with this stupid thing - I've restarted computers and controllers tried multiple computers, etc etc. nothing - very disappointing. Over the past few weeks, I have gotten a notification of a security threat block once or twice from unifi that appears to be associated with trying to connect and I have cleared those by bypassing/allowing the "threat" in the unifi security settings so I don't think this is a firewall issue. This is extremely frustrating - HE worked fine before 3.4.1 remotely and locally. Finally locally works but still not working remotely. I hope this issue is resolved very soon. Now, if anyone else can get remote to work reliably in Composer HE I would like to know that in case the issue is a networking setting on my end.....otherwise I hope this gets fixed fast because it is very frustrating.

We also have a driver for an alternative product by Sensibo.  However Sensibo doesn't do Radon which is big in the states.

I think with these two drivers we can now safely say that Chowmain is done with air quality monitoring and automation.  Time to move on to the next problem.

Radon is indeed big in the states especially here in New England - being able to get regular readings and see/program those in C4 is a great thing!

Apologies for reviving an old thread. Just thought I'd mention this in a place where people interested in this topic would see it. In the latest app update we've added the option to turn off the wallpaper preview for rooms. Should be helpful for properties that don't have many room unique wallpapers. You'll find it as the 2nd row in Preferences.

This is great thank you for adding this option!!

  9. I really wanted to love Josh.ai but we’re getting rid of it as it has never worked properly over the year we have had it. Often it doesn’t respond to the wake word and has been about 20% effective in recognizing commands for us when it does. Constant problems not seeing Sirius channels or selecting the right tidal tracks and the announcements not working or being too loud or too soft. Given the positive praise for it from others I suspect our experience has been largely due to a poor installation by our local integrator for whom we were their first install. While we love the C4 navigators, I agree the Josh app is very well done but I suspect their push toward full control is, in part at least, a tack from their initial voice first approach because voice is very hard and they don’t have the ability (good AI models) to get it better.

    Hi All,

I'm running for the first time a few network cable runs to my pool controller and future backup generator from my inside home network.   My current plan is to you run outdoor rated shielded Cat5e from the outside equipment up my brick exterior wall through my soffit into a switch that is in my attic crawl space.   Before the switch, I was going to insert inline one of these:

    https://www.amazon.com/Ditek-DTK-WM4NETS/dp/B07NCRR4HB

Then run a grounding wire from the above device back outside down my wall and bonded to my grounding rod nearby.    I'm mainly trying to protect a lighting surge travelling through the cable into all of my networking equipment.   Is this an acceptable approach or any other suggestions?

    Thanks in advance!

That’s how we did it but ran through conduit to the pool house (about 200’ I think) and cat6 to pool controller, WiFi AP etc. generators are in a different location but also through conduit. Our exterior runs (these plus cameras) run through a bunch of rack mounted surge protectors that work great. Never had an issue with any of them.

New Update has been pushed today, and is a major update. It introduces a number of new features including

    • Improved Lighting Presets Support (Dim To Warm, fade to color, Previous and set preset),
    • major bug fixes
    • Greatly improved performance (in some synthetic benchmark tests of certain operations, there was a 14x performance improvement), reduced memory usage and all of those tests showed benefits (these are some of the same optimisations that were rolled already into the ELK M1 Betas)

There is a more complete list of updates from: https://chowmain.software/drivers/control4-shelly-generic#revisions

Very cool - this is an awesome driver!

The reality is that the high income, HNW / UHNW client base that can afford professional grade home automation systems often have common traits of impatience, a desire for operational control, and privacy.  I have zero interest in being made dependent on a contractor's W2  employee when I want to make a minor adjustment to the environment of my own home.  Yes, there are times when I may elect to delegate.  But if a system forces me to wait or makes me hostage to someone else's schedule, that system will be in the rubbish bin -- fast.  Composer HE is a competitive advantage for C4 over Crestron and Savant.  Composer HE has provided a real-life introduction to programming for my kids and provided pride of ownership for me.

I was referring primarily to these points. I agree HE is limited in audience but it is also an important competitive advantage - it was part of why we went with C4 over competitors for the reasons quoted above.

I have a tremendous amount of empathy for technology professionals -- especially those supporting forward-facing roles.  How many times has a producer, after a massively profitable week, called a supporting tech department with thanks because no technology issues presented?  Unfortunately, the answer is very few.  The reality is a ton of very talented people are focused in the background permitting us to be unconcerned about critical infrastructure.

I think this is a very good opportunity for those of us who are impacted to reach out to the business leaders / senior management of SnapOne and let them know that Composer HE is a critically important part of our decision to select C4, a catalyst for C4-branded product purchases, and a post-sale source of enjoyment.

There seems to be a misconception that Composer HE serves under-capitalized DIYers who are buying castoff items on eBay.  SnapOne leadership would be making a massive commercial mistake if it subscribes to this fallacy.

Let me be clear, I like the dealer model.  And my dealer has zero interest in programming many of the very useful tasks that we as a family have experimented with -- especially as staffing gets more difficult.  All of these additional functions have led to thousands (or tens of thousands) of dollar spend on products -- which my dealer likes.

There are several improvements that I would like to see to Composer HE.  None of these suggestions involve granting HE the ability to alter bindings or add devices.  Leave that to the dealer.

Specifically (and please help me out so I can send a comprehensive list):

    1. edit and modify existing lines of programming code (currently revisions require an entire line (except compound conditionals) to be deleted and reentered in entirety)
    2. project-global search and replace (a version of Detective Suite); currently, I use a PDF version of the full system report in Adobe Acrobat to find specific lines of code
    3. the ability to see but not change bindings
    4. a copy and paste feature that targets selected lines of code
    5. a search feature in the Variable Agent

In closing, I suggest that SnapOne look at the success premium brands have enjoyed by encouraging subsets of its user base better understand the workings of their products.  Rolls Royce offers Factory Days that literately delve under the hood with a mechanic.  MBUSA and Porsche offer track experiences.  Range Rover has several company sponsored off-road adventures.  This is not only fun for some owners but permits better appreciation of the car and strengthens the relationship between owner and dealer.

My fear is that the Composer HE outage is less of an unplanned bug fix and more of a deliberate strategy to gauge the utility of the software.  If you ask a tech user if he/she would object to removing a feature, most will instinctively object.  Much more effective is to quietly turnoff the feature set and see if anyone notices or complains.

I am eager to hear thoughts from others ....

Though I can’t subscribe to your idea of this being a planned outage, your points about the perceptions of HE and value to the platform and customers are well said and dead on I think.

I’ve also had an issue recently (4 or 5 times) but only when switching from one property to the other.  Closing the app and re-opening it has fixed the problem for me each time.

That’s interesting I’ve tried that when it happened to me and didn’t fix it in my case. Very strange
