How fast should audio play? Also is there an automatic volume control?

Recommended Posts

I just had my new system installed this week in a new built house.  I have speaker systems through the house,  The company that installed it was in charge of the wifi set up, TV, alarm.  I am very inexperienced with any of this stuff.

2 main questions

1.  Is there an automatic volume control?  For example in my living room when I go from TV to audio there is a huge volume jump.  Dealers fix was to set the volumes low so it doesn't blast on.  But this makes the next problem even worse.

2.  Lag time for volume -  it takes a while to get my audio to come on.  I would say at least 10-15 seconds.  At the beginning it was more like 1 minute but they boosted the wifi network and it came down.  The dealer say it takes a while for the "amplifier to turn on and set it up"  This problem is magnified because we have to turn the zones way down.  So by the time you think it should be playing and there is no volume you start turning it up.  how fast should audio go on?  Realistically?

1 No but there is a manual one - if different sources have different volume ratings,  depending on the setup specifics, there are ways to manually set levels for them. In addition, there are default volumes separated for both audio and video that can be set, at least somewhat normalizing exactly where you start at.

2 The lag time you see is indeed likely the lag time for whatever amp you have to turn on. No idea what and how he did with WiFi to 'boost' anything - but 9-ish seconds is not uncommon on many amplifiers - they turn on, do a check internally, then turn of their actual amplification. If your 10-15 seconds is long or not is hard to say without knowing the amplifier you use. f it's the C4 poweramp, it might be set to full auto-sense. If so time can be improved by putting relay control on them, or even wiring them for always on (though the latter is technically not recommended and would increase power consumption).

As a rough average:

Multizone amplifiers tend to take between 3-10 seconds to start firing audio, 6 seconds is a rough average.

A/V receivers are between 5-15 seconds, 9 seconds is a rough average.

with the control4 amp you should have near to no delay (generally sub 10 seconds).  Sounds like something can be optimized.

What is the audio source you are playing? Is it a streaming service? Is it MP3's stored on your network?

I have tried all different sources.  My main thing I would like to do is stream service from my iphone amazon prime.  I have to say it is kinda of annoying how it is set up that you have to add what airplay device you want to listen to it. I have 3 options to use.  The control4 app must be set to play (guest device - airplay 1)  than you need to tell device to play  (guest device - airplay 1).  Than you need to start your music on prime or regular music on your stored on your iphone.    It seems like it is about 5 or 6 steps to get anything but mp3 stored on a usb drive to play.

While all this is happening the music than doesn't start for a while and you start going back into each app and turning it up.

As I mentioend - the power amp, on power sensing are in fact rather slow - but if the dealer just uses the drivers and a few contact sensors and relays, this can be brought down a LOT.

In addition, the C4 matrix has perfectly good source levelling to get all the sources to near to the same volume, eliminating that nastyness too.
