New Ceiling fan recommendation?

Our driver only requires wifi control over the haiku.  Once you have that then you don't need any additional products.

Thank you.  Do you know if the driver will get support by Haiku?

This is the reason I have the driver, so I can control my fans from wall mounted touchscreens. Haiku fans require their own wall switches, and for whatever reason weren't installed in my home leaving me only the Haiku app to control my fans. This obviously leads to a sub-standard experience for guests or anyone wanting to control the fans. I also think their wall control switches are just another edition of wall acne.

When we first released the driver Big Ass contacted us to discuss it.  They were curious about how we did it and wondered how much interest there was from the home automation market.  They advised they will let us know if any changes come that will effect our driver but i think thats the extent that they are going to support us which is fine.

Agreed.  Wall Acne sucks.  One of the major benefits of home automation is to limit this.

Spoke to Haiku this morning.  They recommended caution with your driver (not against it) saying you essentially reverse engineered their IP control which might be broken with a future firmware update.  True, but probably not likely or a big deal.

Their recommendation was to use a Control4 fan controller and their 0-10 module which essentially disables the SenseMe technology.  This seems counter productive.  Why pay extra for all the smarts simply to disable them?

will your driver allow me to read an Ecobee sensor and adjust the fan based on result as their ap does?

is their anything their ap supports that your driver doesn't ?

Yep.  Big Ass Fans do not have a public API.  As i mentioned when we did it they contacted us to discuss it.  I'm not sure who you spoke to at Big Ass Fans but we had meetings with several of their directors and although they did say they won't be actively supporting they did say that they would advise us of any API changes which may effect the driver which to be honest is all we expect of any manufacturer.

Big Ass Fans is one of our most popular drivers.  Its definately one that we will support in the long run since it goes into so many jobs.

Our driver will only control the fan speeds and also control the light level.  All other functionality should be utilised within their app.  Look at the driver as a method of integrating automation tasks to other events (eg tying Control4 keypads to the fans or automating fans turning on when you disarm the security system or turning them off when you arm the security system, etc).

Thanks for the clarification Alan.

Using their ap to do the SenseMe function sort of defeats the purpose of wanting to use C4 in the first place - I want C4 to be able to do everything.

However, since the new Ecobee driver allows checking of the remote sensors, i nay be able to combine that and yours to do something like if temp > 75 turn on fan to level 4.

Woukd be nice if you could work out a deal to use their API.

Hi All,

I'm looking to install a few of the Haiku L Series fans to a new installation, after reading through this post am I right in understanding the  fans communicate wirelessly and I wont need to run any additional cables to the fan?

Also do you have to purchase the sense me model or will be the standard version be fine?

TIA

Cheers

Kroc

Hi Alan -

I am trying to determine which Haiku fan option is best suited to our application.  Our primary interest in the product is aesthetics and energy efficiency but we are more interested in Control4 integration than the BAF Sense Me as we want to be able to coordinate operation with skylights as part of a whole house ventilation plan. My preference would be to order two of the L-series fans, but the guys at BAF in Canada can't tell me whether their fans will work with your drivers in this application or whether I need to order any other features explicitly from them to make the L Series work.  https://www.haikuhome.com/explore/l-series   We are also looking for discreet control of the lights and the fans.  (we will have the two fans operating simultaneously, and the two lights simultaneously.)  Both fans have 14-3 wire home runs to individual wall switches power is run to the switches not to the fan boxes.

Any feedback is appreciated - the guys at BAF have been impossible considering I am trying to buy their fans!

Thanks for your help!

dw

For clarification, we are looking at the 52" L series and would prefer not to have additional wall controls beyond the minimum as well (our fan switches are remotely placed and i-device will be the primary interface for controlling the fans.)

I have Alan's BAF driver for 3 of my Haiku fans.   I then programmed a keypad to act like a fan controller.  It has worked brilliantly so far.

Our driver replicates the iOS/android app commands/feedback.  As such any fan that works with the app with work with out driver.

At the bottom of this note starting with "David"  is the response I just got from the guys at Big Ass...

The L-series does not come with SenseME.  Fine.  I don't want SenseME, I want light and fan control through C4...

I think then, that for App access, I order the wifi chip.

With Alan's driver, I don't need the 0-10 volt module correct?

To summarize -

Order 2 L-series fans and 2 wifi chips

Does this make sense?

No SenseME, No Module.

Thanks Guys, I appreciate the walk through.

David,

The wifi chip and the wall controller used together will give you SenseME technology. You will have temperature control, you can control settings, timers and it will also have motion sensing and much more.

Or you can just get the wifi chip and this will ONLY give you access to using the app on your smart phone but you will not have any other smart technology.

If you're using Control4 then you will need to purchase a 0-10 volt module and you won't need to worry about the wifi chip and wall controller.

I hope this helps!

I've had awesome support from BAF and they have been great to work with (I've been dealing with some app issues specific to the way our router and WAPs are setup).  For background; I've got 6 of the Haiku I Series fans and one of their BAF in our house.  The I series fans came with wifi and SenseMe.  I received the same response from BAF when asked about Control4 integration.  As noted, you don't need the 0-10 module if you plan on purchasing the driver discussed in this thread.  If you don't 'plan on purchasing the driver, you would need it to integrate it with a fan switch.

The fans, as designed, really shouldn't need much interaction from the user once set up.  You can set them up to turn on when you enter the room and off when you leave.  You can set your ideal temp so the fan will automatically vary the fan speed based on the temp of the room when you're in the room.  You can set sleep schedules (with different ideal temps) so that the fan doesn't turn off if you don't move in your sleep.  You do all this in the Haiku App, not in Control4.  Without SenseMe, you lose all of this.  I don't think I've touched the app since I've set them up....they just work in the background and I haven't had any issues.  I did purchase the Control4 driver and it is nice to have, for creating scenes, but I don't think I've really used it except on rare occasions.

Hope this helps.
