Pakedge zones

Recommended Posts

So I'm curious how pakedge zones work...

If you set up a managed SX 24 port switch to utilize the zone management and POE but then add a SE dumb switch to get the extra ports, how does it know what zones go on the expanded switch?  Is that where you just set the SFP+ port to all one type of zone and only put certain hardware on it?  Or is there a way to use MAC addresses to work with the VLAN?  I'm doing a lot of reading but lack the real world experience in this area.  I think this kinda ties into recommended network practices and how we should be budgeting and planning our networks to be more robust for Control4.

Zones are basically VLans.

if you are attaching an unmanaged switch to a single port on the SX24, and require multiple devices on the switch to talk to multiple VLans, then you must make that port a trunk port.

If it’s a single VLan, than set that port for the correct zone.

Very cool.  I didn't figure they would make it so you HAD to use multiple managed switches to get larger systems set up.

So in theory I could use the unmanaged switch and plug in 2 A/V receivers, 2 blue ray players, 2 roku's, my HD HomeRun box, 2 TV's, and my xbox.  Then connect all my C4 gear straight to the managed switch along with my POE camera's, right?

*This thing looks like you can assign MAC addresses to a VLAN.  So I wouldn't have to do it by port, I could do it by MAC address and when the unifi AP's send data then the wireless device would get put in the correct VLAN.  Am I going down the right road?

This s*&%t is cool!

Certainly could.

Obviously you can't configure any of the unmanaged switch ports for certain VLAN tags.  But usually if I'm using an UnSw after my core managed switch, I just set the port connecting it as a trunk so all VLAN tags are available to any product on the UnSw.  Or if I'm adding an UnSw for a bunch a gear that should be on its own VLAN, like Videostorm Netplay or similar, then I set the port for that particular VLAN and now all ports on the UnSw belong to that VLAN.

I personally don't use Pakedge at all but it should be the same principles as any other Managed network.

Hope that makes sense.

On the Pakedge managed switch (SX-24) running multiple VLANs, is the trunk port designation necessary if I'm connecting a second managed switch (SX-8P), or is connecting to a hybrid port sufficient?

Thank you. However, I'm interconnecting two managed pakedge switches. Currently 24P port 24 is patched to 8P port 1. Both ports are set to hybrid for all VLANS. Seems to work, but just wanted to confirm.

Reviving an old thread here. I use 3 managed pakedge 24 port switches in my system and when I set the ports to trunk nothing works.

Router LAN 1 > Port 22 Switch 1

Switch 1 SFP (port 24) > SFP (port 22) Switch 2

Switch 2 SFP (port 24) > SFP (port 22) Switch 3

When setup like this and all of the above ports are set to trunk nothing works. If I switch them all to hybrid everything works just fine. Never had any luck with trunks. Not sure why. Perhaps a pakedge expert can chime in.

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one.
