Arryve
I just picked up a KD120 and an auxiliary switch to replace two 3-way switches in my home. I do have a neutral wire available, but I’m a little confused with the wiring instructions that came with the keypad. It shows that for a 3-way configuration that the yellow auxiliary wires must be connected together. Since this isn’t possible in an already built home, is there another way to wire this? I have hot, neutral, ground, and a traveler at both switch locations. Thanks!!
chopedogg88
you are supposed to connect the yellow wires over one of the two traveler wires. in a typical 3-way wiring scenario, the hot will be at one end and the switch leg will be at the other end. So you use one of the travelers to pass either the switch leg or the hot to the other end, so that the end where you want to put the KD has both hot and the switch leg. then you use the 2nd traveler wire to connect the yellow wires together. chopedogg88
PS> the travelers are almost always 1 red and 1 black wire. Time2Jet and ejn1 1
RAV
First you need to figure out where the line and load are. Often they are in two different boxes. Then you need to adjust traveler wires as stated, to bring the load or line as necessary to the box where the KD120 will go. Then using the remaining traveler wire, connect the AUX lines. Neutral passes and connects through all boxes. I am not an electrician, if you're not familiar with hooking up such equipment, please hire a professional. Arryve
Both replies here are extremely helpful, and how I had assumed that it should be wired. I have done a fair amount of electrical work around my home, including many other 3 and 4-way switches - so very familiar. Thank you both for the detail here!! msgreenf
