I want a plane. Ooh ooh wait, I want a boat. Damn, can I have a vertical takeoff plane on a boat?

Msgreenf said it best. There are pros to both. If you like to use music or music apps on an iPhone or iOS device then both work well. If you have an android or windows phone and need to use DLNA or Bluetooth, then my personal recommendation is the Sonos because of of the Sonos app and it's streaming ease.

If you prefer to use steaming music services, Sonos is also a strong option.

Happy automating!

Hi,

And which controller do you have. If you have an HC800 or ea then you can add the shairbridge driver that replicates the airplay function of the wmb.

What music sources do you listen to.

If 1. local on hdd or nas 2. Tunein 3. Pandora 4. Rhapsody 5. Deezer 6. Tidal 7. Airplay are sufficient for yiur needs you need neither.

Says the guy that just upgraded to an 800 and sold his zone player.

Ps I also pay ~$60 a year for Pandora One ans pay for Rhapsody.

I have both. For some reason I have had numerous problems with my sonos not functioning correctly and as of this post its acting up again which caused me to put in a service call to my dealer. The nice thing about the C4 WB is I can still stream to it from my phone when the my sonos's are not working. I'm going to ask my dealer to install the shairbridge driver to my HC800 which I hope gives me even more streaming options.

It will give you another streaming airplay source, or as many as you install. But no more sources. The sources are then anything Apple.

Adding onto this.  If I mainly stream XM Radio through a subscription, can I use the C4 Music Bridge or do I need something like the Sonos Connect?

Sure, or shairbridge if from an Apple device.

Indeed, this method has the advantage that you have on demand channels available, where Sonos does not.

My question was does C4 have the ability to stream XM Radio through my account?  Or do I need to use an external device like Sonos Connect?

Natively it would need the vintage am/fm/xm tuner with the xm card but that's not streaming that's broadcast.

Xm streaming is nit native so would be SONOS or airplay/dlna etc to the controller.

Sounds well worth it just to install a driver to have one more streaming source even if airbridge does only accommodate apple.

You can install multiple of this driver so one for Mr one for Mrs one for each kid or do it by room.

Thx. My dealer should be here within the next 2 weeks and I will have him install the drivers. One question. Does installing multiple drivers effect the efficiency of the HC800 i.e. make it run slower or less efficiently?

Others can answer that better. I have one of these and three Pandora installed. No noticeable speed thing.

Having multiple drivers sitting there shouldn't give you too much trouble, though Shairbridge would be heavier than deezer/pandora etc (reason why you can do the latter on a 250) - all in use may be a different matter, but it should be able to handle the hard max of 4 active streams no problem anyway (you can have up to 24 drivers in a project, but only 4 will stream a ta time - what's the use? One driver per room for auto start)

The addition of sharebridge drivers would only be for streaming music from iphones mostly from my kids or guests. My wife and I don't mess with our smartphones. We just stream music from one of two sonos;s that I have. As of now I think my C4 Music Bridge picks up what the kids stream although I think my apple TV has the capability to stream from smartphones along with possibly my Roku . I really don't need the sharebridge but I thought it wouldn't hurt. I guess sometimes more is not better.

It's a lot cleaner on the metadata and transport controls than going through another piece of hardware.

Sonos is fine - I use it a lot, however, there are things Sonos can't do that native service apps can do (ie SiriusXM on demand) with.

Sonos is in fact mainly use BY my kids - as it's easy to get to the kids channels for them :)

  • 2 weeks later...

We have done native streaming in a few projects, but I still massively prefer Sonos.

My top two music services are SiriusXM and Google Music. Neither of these are available through Control4. We've also tried HEOS in the showroom and it has a shortage of music services too.

I do that with Rhapsody playlists and Pandora channels.
