Nowhere in the Yale documentation, apart from what a report rep told me after going back and forth with Yale support for a week, does it state that the bridge is required to use HomeKit with the new locks.

For the 2 days or so that the lock did work for me before HomeKit integration completely broke - I didn’t need to use the bridge for remote access via HomeKit. I was able to use HomeKit remotely using just the lock (with or without the C4 Zigbee module inside) and an Apple TV.

I had Yale support tell me that I need the Yale WiFi Hub in order to use HomeKit over wifi with the new locks and that HomeKit will only communicate via bluetooth with the locks and that the wifi is only intended for their app. At least that is what Yale support told me on Friday. It is curious because this is mentioned nowhere in the documentation online or that comes with the new locks.

My understanding was that the WiFi module/bridge are intended only for Yale app access remotely and HomeKit communicates via Bluetooth only. I believe this is the case for all of the Yale Assure Lock 2 models - the original, the Home Keys model, and fingerprint model.

  3. I just heard back from Yale a few hours ago on the issue I was facing with HomeKit and the lock - the lock needs to be replaced! so it worked for all of 2 days with the Home Keys!

None of my Assure Lock 2 with HomeKeys locks are working with Apple Home Kit over wifi.

The 2 days the HomeKit integration worked for me, I was able to control the lock via HomeKit through WiFi. My HomeKit hub is the first gen Apple TV 4k.

Curious if, when different users unlock the lock using Home Key, do you get different "LAST_UNLOCKED_BY" values in Composer?

I'm actually having trouble with my lock. Home Keys was working great with my phone, but with the watch it would stop working in spurts. To rule out any set up issues, I factory reset the lock. Now the lock fails to add in Home Kit. I talked to both Yale and Apple support. Right now they're clueless, and it seems like they might need to replace the lock.

That said, I have an extensive and robust wifi mesh network that is rock solid and very responsive.

My WiFi is strong as well, using a Unifi setup. I don’t suspect that to have been an issue when I tried it out. One difference though - I used the August Connect WiFi bridge. I never tried the Yale WiFi module. A disadvantage of the module though is that it drains the battery on the lock a lot quicker.

I would be curious what the response time is from the time you do an action within the C4 app vs when it is executed and reported back vs wifi.

My setup wouldn’t be a fair benchmark for the response time. The extent of my ZigBee network is a Core 1 and the Yale lock, that’s it. The distance between the two isn’t a lot, but there are several obstructions.

That said, the response time varies from 1-4 seconds, which is the same as what I experienced with the first gen Assure Lock. Someone else with a more extensive ZigBee network might be better to comment on the response time of ZigBee vs Wi-Fi, but I’ve heard it’s a lot quicker on ZigBee. When I did use Wi-Fi, it sometimes took as long as 15 seconds for a response and sometimes commands completely failed as well.

  7. I have good news! The Yale Assure Lock 2 Plus (with Apple Home Keys) works with the C4 ZigBee module!

I was using the module in my older Assure Lock gen 1. I swapped out the module to the new lock and registered the module in the Yale app, and it all worked immediately. Nothing had to be done in C4.

I haven't tried it in the model with fingerprint, but I assume it would be the same since the Verge article made it seem like the fingerprint version has wider module support than the Home Keys model.

    Use August connect driver

I used that for a while with my Assure Lock 1st gen. It was very unreliable for me - the status of the lock would often mismatch in C4 and commands from C4 would often not lead to a physical action on the lock. I worked with Cinegration as well to debug these issues, and one of their driver updates about a year ago was based on their fixes for this. The update reduced the frequency of the problems, but didn’t fix it completely.

Has your experience been good with the driver?

The Verge article says the Apple Home Keys version won't initially support the wave module which makes me wonder if the lock's firmware will need to be updated to support that - and possibly also the C4 module. Hopefully that's not the case - look forward to hearing how your testing goes @ashwinmj!

I came across this as well in the article about an hour ago. What I understood from my read of it is that the fingerprint version won't support the z-wave module for now, but it will in the future ("Z-Wave module compatibility is coming soon"). And the Apple Home Keys version won't support the z-wave module at all ("won’t work with the Z-Wave module"). I also assume that if z-wave won't work then zigbee won't.

I was thinking of canceling my order when I read this.

Is there anyone in the US who's planning to test this out? I live outside of the US, so it would be a hassle to return it if it doesn't work.

Sorry, I'll rephrase. What would be the benefit?

If it’s just a single task of unlocking the door remotely, the Yale app is a lot quicker than doing it via the C4 app in terms of the number of taps and load time. With Wi-Fi connectivity, I can also get access to the Door Sense status in C4.

I can’t speak to other models that use the Yale Access app, but I can report definitively that, with the Assure 2 locks with C4 zigbee module installed, the app can continue communicating with the lock (you can setup and manage auto lock from the app in this way - as well as a number of settings, lock firmware upgrade, etc) as long as it is in Bluetooth range of the lock.  I believe the Assure 2 has a built in Bluetooth radio which does not deactivate when the C4 module is in there and in this way allows advanced features and lock control through the app. Really like the Yale Assure 2 and C4 module combo - C4 integration remains perfect totally reliable, user management and all C4 features work great!

Do you know if I can use the C4 zigbee module and at the same time pair a Yale wifi bridge to the built in bluetooth of the lock? That way there would be both C4 zigbee integration as well as Yale app connectivity even when not in bluetooth range.

AFAIK, the fingerprint / bluetooth versions will work with Apple HomeKit, just not Apple Home Keys and the - is that correct?

From what I’ve understood, yes all versions support Apple HomeKit, but only the Plus variant supports Apple Home Keys as well.

And isn't Bluetooth in all versions of the lock, even if it isn't explicitly advertised?

Yeah, seems like all Assure Lock 2 models have Bluetooth built in. It also seems like you can get the Wi-Fi access either by using the Wi-Fi module or the Wi-Fi bridge. I wonder if this allows the usage of the C4 Zigbee module and the Wi-Fi bridge at the same time. Seems like the best of both worlds.

And, what is the general consensus in terms of security / convenience of fingerprint vs Apple Home Keys.

I agree that fingerprint is the safest - no one can “steal” it. But with Apple Home Keys, my understanding is that there’s an express mode that can be disabled or enabled - if it’s enabled Face ID also needs to be authenticated first to use the Home Key. I guess if someone could get past that, they could do a lot more damage with the phone.

  13. Yes, they support the modules just like the standard Assure Lock 2 - these are just variants of the Assure Lock 2. The fingerprint version is called Assure Lock 2 Touch and the Apple Home Keys version is called Assure Lock 2 Plus.

Similar to the standard Assure Lock 2, they sell them as either Bluetooth only without a module bundled or as the wifi version with the Wi-Fi module bundled. The pre bundled z-wave options don’t seem to be announced yet.

I talked to Yale and they said these will be available to buy from the 27th of this month. They also said the Apple Home Keys version is going to be a key free variant only.

@Dueport what do you think about the compatibility of these with the C4 zigbee module?

  14. It looks like Yale is launching two new variants of the Yale Assure Lock 2 - one with fingerprint and one with Apple Home Keys support.

Does anyone know if these new variants would work with the C4 zigbee module AYR202-ZB-C4? I saw on another thread that it works with the standard Assure Lock 2, but I’m wondering if it would with the 2 new variants as well.

Yale customer care also told me that any Assure Lock 2 won’t work outside of the US and Canada, as only the Yale Home app is supported in other parts of the world (as opposed to the Yale Access app in US and Canada). Does anyone have any experience using the Assure Lock 2 outside of US and Canada?

    Thanks!

Yes, I think I may have found where the issue is occurring.  Thank you for sending me those logs, James.  Just to confirm my suspicion (for those seeing the issue), is the missing wallpaper a custom/user image?  Meaning it's not one of the in-app default wallpapers.

I'm seeing the issues in a few of my devices. The missing wallpapers are in specific rooms only, and the rooms for which they are missing are different on different devices.

All wallpapers are custom images that I've uploaded through the app.

  16. @Jonathan, C4 Engineer I have had the exact same problem for a while now. I have 6 cameras - 1 DoorBird door station and 5 Hikvision cameras. The DoorBird's thumbnail works fine, but the Hikvision cameras thumbnail's usually take a long time to load only on the iOS app. I don't see this problem on Android or my T3 touch screens. I've tried 2 different Hikvision camera drivers, and it's the same problem with both of them.

    Director: 3.2.4.615802

    Main controller: EA-3

iOS device: iPhone 13 Pro (I see the problem on iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone Xs Max as well)

    iOS app version: 322.19.0

    iOS version: 15.4.1

Thanks for your help. I'm sending you a DM as well, if that should be easier.

  17. The app is super quick with the new update! Thanks to the C4 team for making this happen!

Would this update also fix the discussion I had started in the thread below:

It's a problem I've been facing for a few months even when using the app on the local network. Any time the iOS app was opened, after the UI finished loading it seemed like there was no communication between the app and director for around the first 30 seconds. For example, opening lights/shades would show an empty list, watching any source wouldn't actually turn any equipment on until the 30 seconds was over but the app would look like the source was playing, tapping a favorited light wouldn't change the state of the light until the 30 seconds were over, etc. But after the initial 30 seconds or so, all the commands execute as though they had queued up until then.

The problem would go away if I removed the system from the app and added it again, but would show up again after 2-3 days. The only solution was to remove and add the system again.

  18. @LewVickers I have been struggling with this problem for a while. I'm seeing it show up in a few different scenarios - when the Control4 controller is restarted, the Fire TV is restarted, and randomly when nothing is restarted/changed.

I brought up these issues I was facing on the thread below. However, it seemed like I was the only one facing this problem and it was stable for everyone else. I was advised on that thread that my dealer should report the problem to Control4 - he said he's talked to them about this but I haven't heard back anything.

  19. That’s exactly what I’m trying to avoid - I don’t want CEC enabled on the TV, but I want a way to be able to control the source via CEC. I was hoping to be able to insert a CEC controller between the source and the TV, and and have CEC enabled only on the source and controller. That way, I get CEC control of the source without letting it affect anything with the TV.

The source is a Facebook Portal TV. I think it runs Android, but I’m not sure. Is there a way to find out? It also has a USB-C port, but Facebook says it’s reserved for future use. @videostorm any recommendations on how to figure out if it works with IRUSB?
