  1. Looks great, but I kind of get a kick out of the DSC alarm panel. I have the same one and these things are about 1980s technology. I wonder why they don't move to something more up to date?
  2. Do Mac's have a Remote Desktop Client? Then why not just use your Mac to RDP into the Windows PC. You don't really need a keyboard or monitor once it is setup.
  3. I depends what you want to use that computer for. Do you want to have a fileserver at home? I have a rack mounted PC in my rack that is my home server. It runs unRAID, which is a Linux variant that is targeted at NAS-type systems, but it also acts as my media server runs a bunch of applications in Docker containers, like the Unifi controller, Plex, PiHole, SageTV. It also runs a Windows VM plus some Linux distro VMs that I play around with.
  4. But a RAID server doesn't have to have a low end CPU. My unRAID server has a pretty decent CPU (i5-11400) as it isn't just a NAS, it is a media server as well so may do transcoding of video files, etc.
  5. But routers generally have CPUs that aren't all that fast and your bandwidth can be substantially limited when you have an active VPN connection, at least that used to be the case with OpenVPN. I think Wireguard is less CPU intensive. And my router is a Unifi USG and I don't think Unifi supported VPN, although they have increased support in that area in recent years. I have my unRAID server running 24x7 so adding VPN through that is not a big deal. And it may be useful in other ways, like if you have two homes you may want to use a VPN or other connection to share media files between the two homes.
  6. What do you mean by separate the services? Do you mean run the VPN software on your router or on separate hardware?
  7. You don't need routers to create VPNs, you can do that with other PCs that you may have on your LAN. I used to run OpenVPN on my router, but now I use either OpenVPN in a docker on my unRAID server, or Wireguard which is built into unRAID. I also use unRAID, which is a linux NAS-centric OS, as a file server and to run docker containers for stuff like my Unifi controller, Plex, etc.
  8. But that only appears to work with a subset of Chamberlain openers, those with yellow learn buttons.
  9. Yes, and Hellman & Friedman, which is the Private Equity firm that bought Snap One from General Atlantic in 2017, still owns 72.4%. But the stock is at $8.71, down more than 50% from the IPO price of $18 in August of 2021.
  10. I guess the question remains open on whether this is a viable business over the long run. Snap One has not made any money in the numbers that I see from 2019 to the present. Their sales also seem to be stuck at about $1B over the last three years and the estimate for next year is $1.1 in sales.
  11. Yep, and I just had my acronym a bit off.
  12. Does this happen to all systems or only some? If it is the former then how does this get past QC?
  13. Did you just update the app or has your controller been updated?
  14. But isn't that kind of a different issue? I use Spotify for playing music on Alexa - you can select what you want as your default streaming source. I am pretty sure that you can use Tidal as well. https://tidal.com/partners/amazonalexa Enjoy TIDAL on all your Amazon Echo devices Getting started Open the Amazon Alexa App on your phone Go to “Settings” > “Music” Tap “Link New Service” > “TIDAL” Click “Enable to Use” and link your TIDAL account Head back to “Settings” > “Music” Select “TIDAL” under “Default Services”
  15. FYI, I have three of these in my system and they keep chugging along. Can you tell if the IP address changed - you can see the address on the LCD screen.
  16. Exactly - I haven't ever seen these in person, but it does save needing an adapter. And for US$10 or so who cares if it doesn't work so well.
  17. Your cheapest solution would be something like this https://www.amazon.ca/LINESO-3-5mm-Stereo-White-Extender/dp/B01HHO8382/. There are a bunch of similar devices on Amazon. Kind of low risk if you want to try it out. I have a few pair like this, although mine have RCA plus on both baluns and are likely a different brand. And they work fine. I actually use them in both directions as I have some rooms with amps but don't want to have a C4 controller just for an audio source, so I send audio from my rack to the room over ethernet with this type of balun.
  18. I think it may depend on the type of baluns but analog audio baluns should not introduce a delay. But when you are extracting audio from HDMI that can cause sync issues. What will be the source for the TV? And how will you get the audio from the video source, connecting directly to the source, or using the TV audio out?
  19. I would agree with this, but it isn't always possible with your ISP. And if you have IPTV with your ISP then you may cause other problems by doing this. My ISP, Rogers Cable in Canada, does not let you use external modems, you have to use their "gateways" which combine modem, router, WAP, switch. But you can normally put them in bridge mode.
  20. I am not sure that you really need special hardware. I have PiHole running in Docker container on my unRAID server, along with my Unifi Controller, Plex Server, Home Assistant, Linux and Windows VMs, etc.
  21. When I saw the thread title I thought that this would be about a ski resort
  22. By custom names do you mean room specific - like Netflix Kitchen or Netflix Office? Or are there other reasons for having different names?
  23. Do mini drivers need to be added to each room where you will be using them, or do they just need to be added once to your project and you can map several rooms to one instance of a mini-driver, say Netflix?
  24. What problems does it cause? And do you have to exclude all C4 equipment or just the primary controller, or all controllers? Does it really matter if an old matrix-amp uses the PiHole as the DNS? I have used it for years, and there have been other people on here mentioning it so I am not the only one.
