Sorry to resurrect this old thread. I'm having a similar situation. EA-5 and have a component matrix. Have an HDFury to make the physical connection work.

If you were to use the houselogix driver as suggested above - how would go about linking things so you are able to select the EA-5 as the On Screen Device?

Nial - how did you end up solving the problem?

Any help would be much appreciated.

I ended up using the Path Setter driver to represents the HDFury.

So I put the input to it as the component and the output as the HDMI, just like you have physically with the HDFury.

    No other config was needed.

    Good questions!

My main interest would be in what I would refer to as "utility drivers" - these would be drivers that don't interact with any other 3rd party hardware.

Assuming I could demonstrate the development of a driver (e.g. putting together the business case) - I would then reach out to C4 and ask to be an "authorized driver developer" to get a copy of Composer Pro.   Is that not right?   How do other driver developers get a copy of Composer Pro (when they themselves aren't a dealer and don't service/support C4 systems)

If you you how to develop drivers yourself.   Would it be worth $100 for an hour or two to walk me through what you know?

I would think the C4 community would be very welcoming to have someone like myself who is excited about Control4 and is eager to either set up a mutually beneficial work arrangement to get a copy of Composer Pro or is willing to pay someone to help learn how to develop drivers!

Ignore all those telling you it's hard to do. It's relatively easy even without people to help you. I imagine the people who find it hard to do don't have much background in programming (not talking about using composer to do "programming").

I started to document my learning experience of writing drivers to do stuff a couple of years ago, maybe it will give you the basics of what you need to do:

    https://c4drivers.wordpress.com

I gave up writing it because I found it easier to do the things I wanted to do using the SOAP Api on my external devices. But it all depends on what you want to do.

I've always thought the end users on this forum are vocal but in the way vast minority.  We represent maybe 1% of their user base at best (Statistically speaking) and have a very passionate opinion about the product/company that does not relate to how 99% of their customers see the product.

I've met 2 people in my town through friends who have C4 installed and could not care less about a forum, DIY services, Composer Pro, etc.  neither have Composer HE.  neither knew this website was operational, one said he may check it out the other could care less.  Both are happy customers.  They moved in, got a recommendation to add a system, did so, its in a closet somewhere and life goes on.  They have no idea what hardware they have or upgrades, etc. One friend who introduced us is a DIY type and said doesnt lack of control bother you?  And the guy said I work for a living, last thing I want to do on the weekend is fiddle.  I dont fix my toilets, I dont fix my computers, I want to spend time with my family on nights/weekends.  I think that is the customer C4 targets, affluent customers (does not have be a 5,000 sq ft mansion with 100+ lighting loads) who just want it to work and do not mind hiring someone to do it.

Again, we aren't the normal C4 customer on this forum.

Completely agree, I too have friends like this.

I think my point is that if C4 go for growth, and its not in the consumer end, then the dealers will of course follow for the better rewards. If that happens then what happens to the people who need to swop a switch or replace their TV and need a new driver.

They find new customers and lose old customers 😉

For real though, that's standard. Can't appease every single customer.

Good point. I suppose it's the direction they want to go. there are only so many customers at the higher end, the explosion in growth is at the lower end.

When they max out the higher end, how will they increase profits if they can't grow their customers. I think the answer is in another popular thread on $600 remotes.

  5. Jayaredoubleu you make a very good argument.

There are many parallels between home automation and the computer industry in the early days. If you wanted to do custom things on computers in the past you had to spend a lot on a compiler. Now they are free or included.

The same with how many computer shops there were 25 years ago, now everyone is more skilled, things are easier to do, and there are hardly any.

Will the home automation market go the same way? I wouldn't bet against it.

  6. If you use the onscreen display for lights, security, heating etc then don't upgrade as you loose all of this. The benefits are not enough for me for the loss of functionality.

The only hardware I had  thats not supported was the touchscreen, but the new app on an iPad is far better.

On the plus side the new app is very good, lots of nice things like being able to see which lights are still on, rather than having to scroll the whole house to find them. Also putting shortcuts to things on the main screen are very useful.

I've not found any exciting functionality that makes it a must have, but apart from the OSD stuff thats missing its much nicer to have.

but when people are dismissive of the help I and others give, and their behavior/attitude is suspiciously like the DIY-wannabe who hurts basically all of us, I don't stay silent.

Did you read the thread, I think I made it clear that a dealer did the upgrade and I wanted to know if I could roll back myself.

There is no need to cast aspersions about people you don't know, as you can see from the other messages it doesn't enhance your reputation. Quite the opposite.

To add the context (which proves your point exactly) I did have it upgraded by a dealer, but wanted to know how it could be rolled back so I knew what was involved. So I could see if I could do it myself or work out how much it would cost in dealer time.

Obviously its in C4 & dealers interest that the market is bigger. That comes from more people using their stuff and taking an interest in it - thats how you get loyal users.

People asking questions about how things are done is to increase their knowledge, and in turn builds their loyalty. Being told I can't tell you because its a secret has the opposite effect.

Ok... Generally I've been fairly quiet for the last year and mostly just reading the threads watching for new C4 stuff or other interesting 3rd party items, and or ideas.

But I had to pop in and post before slinking back into the shadows...  Are you always this nasty to people and are you yourself a dealer, hopefully not mine if you are... I ask because many of your posts trend towards not so nice. The OP said he just upgraded, didn't say he did it and didn't say he didn't do it.  I think most of us assumed he upgraded via his dealer who didn't inform him of possible issues, conflicts, or loss of functionality.  Believe it or not, not every dealer is amazing and covers these things.  Sometimes a client calls and says they want to upgrade and so the dealer upgrades them, no questions asked.

Yes you can read this thread and come to possible conclusions but why? What purpose does it serve outside of trolling someone. I'm sure I'll get accused of doing the same thing but if you look at my past posts you'll see that my MO is generally the same. There is no reason to be mean, nasty, ignorant, or otherwise to people.

With that said, back to the shadows and maybe someday I'll just learn to keep my mouth shut.

Thanks for saying what I was thinking, I'd stopped replying because I could see where this was going.

To add the context (which proves your point exactly) I did have it upgraded by a dealer, but wanted to know how it could be rolled back so I knew what was involved. So I could see if I could do it myself or work out how much it would cost in dealer time.

  9. For OS 2 on iOS you can open the url

    control4v2://test

Now the app might not be able to open it directly (apps must contain the urls they open when submitted to apple). But mail and safari don't have the restriction, so you can host a web page on the internet with a redirect in it. Something like

    <HTML><HEAD><meta http-equiv="refresh" content="1;url=control4v2://test" /></HEAD><BODY>Redirecting to C4</BODY</HTML>

Then put the url of the webpage in your app. It will open safari, which will then open this url.

It could work for android as well, but I've not looked in the APK to see which intents (urls) it will support.

For OS 3 - I couldn't see a url in the info.plist, so it won't work for that.

You're apparently not a dealer, because you don't have access to the proper materials, taking away from the livelihood of half the people on this board.

Thanks for the value that you add to the community.

Are you seriously accusing me of stealing the livelihood of dealers? I'd ask how I'd done that, but to be honest I don't really want to get involved.

My understanding is you can turn on/off lights but not adjust brightness outside of an experience button/scene so you can have "watch TV" or add lighting to the TV to ensure they are a certain level. You can turn them on/off. But you can't use slider.

Thanks, that's pretty helpful. I might be able to make that work as a stop gap. I'll take a look.

Yeah,  BUT it was in nearly every review (and I assume the release notes) that I read about 3.0.. literally, everyone has been talking about it.

Not trying to start an argument, but take a look at their screenshots on the website. I see lights here.

    image.png.8a2e0765ce428b94eb3f77bf5f16b8ff.png

The description below the picture reads:

Favorites make it fast to get to your most-used lights or scenes, and also quickly start your favorite movie or music.

  13. Thanks, I take it from your reply that the answer is to re-image it and restore a backup, and re-associate all the Zigby remotes and keypads.

I'm missing the lights and the security from the OSD, wish I'd known beforehand.

I don't suppose anyone knows if there are plans to bring them back to the OSD.
